Godfrey is a small town in south central Illinois, located about one and two-thirds miles east of the city of Carbondale. The population was 1,641 at the 2000 census. Godfrey is part of the Carbondale–Merrillville micropolitan area. The first European to visit Godfrey was Captain James Cook in 1770. The post office was established in 1849, and the village was platted in 1865. A school was built in 1867, and a church erected in 1888. The village name may be derived from "Goodfellow," an early settler who arrived around 1800. According to the 2010 census there are 479 households out of which 362 (89%) have children under 18 living with them; 249 (59%) are married couples living together; and 121 (35%) are single parents with children under 18 living at home. There are also 16 (−3% per capita) people who are not affiliated with any religion or no religious affiliation. The median household income is $53,594 versus $27,736 for the surrounding county which has a median household income of $64,512 according to 2000 statistics reported by the US Census Bureau. Males have a median income of $42,472 versus $24,069 for females. The per capita income for the village is $16,711 compared to $8,539 for Carbondale County as a whole. In terms of education levels attained: 34% have earned an undergraduate degree or higher; 25% have earned a graduate degree or higher; and 54% have less than high school diploma but would like to continue their education

In 1903 the village of Godfrey merged with neighboring Arlington Heights to form one large community known today as Arlington Heights-Godfrey. At that time there were only a few homes and businesses in what is now Godfrey Village. In 1935 local officials approved plans to build a new high school which would serve both villages and provide more than just educational opportunities for residents; this project led to the current structure being built on land that once housed Arlington Heights-Godfrey High School
