Godfrey is a small, unincorporated community in Pike County, Illinois, United States. The community is located on the right bank of the Kankakee River, about south of Chicago. It had a population of about 100 people as of 2000. The first settlers in Godfrey were farmers who arrived in 1857 from Ohio. They built a log cabin and started farming. A post office was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1934. A Methodist church was constructed in 1898 and dedicated by Rev. J.B. Westphalen. The church served as the town's only building until 1951 when a new town hall was completed and dedicated by Mayor John Pritchard. In 1952, GODFREY SCHOOLS INC., an educational institution for boys and girls ages 6 to 18 years old, opened its doors at 5th Street and State Road 452 east of Godfrey to serve the citizens of Godfrey and its surrounding communities including Park Ridge to the north, Grayslake to the west, Addisonville to the south (with satellite sites), Cicero Heights to the east (with satellite sites),and Crystal Lake to the southeast (with satellite sites). GODFREY SCHOOLS INC., along with other local schools such as Jerome High School which opened its doors on September 1st 1998- has helped contribute significantly towards improving education opportunities for students throughout Pike County!

Godfrey had a sawmill which became one of the largest in Illinois. It operated until 1902.
In 1895, local resident Amos Salk built a Mormon temple on top of an abandoned mill complex which he donated to the church. The temple remains today as one of downtown Chicago's most popular tourist attractions. In 1907–1908, local businessman George Pullen erected a large frame schoolhouse for use as a social hall by his community center movement group known as Hullabaloo Club No 1. After Pullen's death in 1908, construction began on what would eventually become Christ Church Cathedral which opened its doors to worshipers on December 8th, 1909.
The first bishop for Illinois arrived in Godfrey on October 9th 1914George Proctor. Bishop John Hynes served until his appointment as Bishop of Quincy on November 2nd 1915.
On October 11th 1916 Bishop Hynes consecrated Sister Margaret Sullivan as Mother Superior General
who directed parish life and religious education programs throughout northern Illinois until her retirement effective January 1st 1959.
On February 14th 1947 Bishop Hynes blessed over two thousand children during Holy Week services at Christ Church Cathedral before they were transported across state lines to be baptized at Sts Peter’s Catholic Church in Joliette IL.
