Godfrey was a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 501 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Joliet–Naperville metropolitan area. Godfrey was founded in 1848 by John Godfrey and his wife Elizabeth. The town was named for George Washington Godfrey, who had come to the area in 1837 as an interpreter on a visit to Kankakee County. The first store in Godfrey opened its doors on Main Street in 1849. A post office been established at Godfrey in 1850; it served until 1909. The original church building burned down in 1903, but a new church was built soon afterward. In 1907, the first school opened in godfrey; it operated until 1972 when it closed due to lack of students and money. In 1951, the last school closed and became a convenience store while still keeping some classes open for students who wanted to attend them during lunchtime. In 1957, following annexation by neighboring Joliet Township, Godfrey renamed itself Joliet Township after its new township president, Melvin Jolson Jr.. After three years of wrangling between two townships over which name to give their newest community (Joliet being more populous), the issue finally ended with both townships adopting "Godfrey" as their official name on January 1st 1959……….. This would remain true even after Joliet Township merged with other municipalities including Naperville on January 1st 1999 creating one large city Limits Area within Chicago’s boundaries……………. Although there have been occasional references made to "Grodrey" or "Godfreys" through out these years- most notably duringen 2002 re-population estimate which placed the population of “Grodrey” at 710 residents-the official name has continued to be "Joliet Township."
