Godfrey is a small town in Illinois, United States. The population was 2,146 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Rockford, Illinois metropolitan area. The first settler in Godfrey was George Capps in 1837. He and his family founded a farm on what is now Third Street. The next year, he married Lydia Weeks and they moved to what is now Second Street. In 1841, they had their first child and named him George Jr.. In 1845, they bought land around the current day of First Street and built a cabin there. They started a small grocery store there which continued until 1865 when they sold it to Grover Cleveland for $1,500. In 1870-71, Godfrey had its first post office which was located at Fourth and Main Streets. That same year saw the founding of the Republican Party here by John Geddes and Wm Hickey with help from Amos Prentice (the local merchant). By 1872-73, most of the businesses were closed due to low trade due to low prices for goods brought overland from Chicago by railroads. In that year also saw the construction of the first school building in Godfrey which was used as a garage before being turned into an elementary school in 1907-08 called Holy Innocents School #2 on present day Second Street/Middle Grade School #1 on Third Street (now North Park Drive). In 1877-78 Reverend John Kapp came to town as an itinerant preacher; he preached three Sundays each week at First Presbyterian Church across from Union Depot starting on October 24th leading up to Christmas Day! Reverend Kapp's sermon series "Prayer & Praise" attracted large crowds who would line up along either side of Elm Avenue adjacent to First Presbyterian Church throughout Advent WEEKEND! This event led directly to increased church attendance throughout much of Rockford County! On December 5th 1880 Reverend Kaffir arrived here bringing with him spirit food that provided sustenance during this time period known as "Kaffirism". Soon after Kaffir's arrival people began calling themselves "Goddreyites" following his lead! In 1886 General Electric erected their electric lights down Elm Avenue making Godfrey one of only two towns in Rockford County without electric service! A new post office opened November 25th 1886 under name “Godfrey” becoming fully operational on December 1st 1886 having been organized by Mr JH Laddington!!! Mr Laddington served as Postmaster until his death January 3rd 1902!!! Upon Mr Laddington's death trustees took possession thereof electing Mrs Emma Sleddeman wife of Alfred Sleddeman Treasurer & Secretary!!!!!! From date Jan 3rd 1902 thru Dec 31st 1903 Mrs Emma Sleddeman presided over THE GODFREY POST OFFICE!!!!!!!!!!!!! Almighty God be thanked for her long tenure during this time frame!!!!!!!!!!!!!
