In 1908, General Electric began construction on a large factory which would become known as GE-Edison Manufacturing Company; it housed the world's first electronic products manufacturing plant (the "Edison Switchboard"). A school serving grades K-12 called Central High School opened in 1953 and remains operational today; it replaced an earlier school which burned down in 1951 during a tornado outbreak that occurred around the same time as GE's opening. Theold village of Godfrey consisted of only a few homes, most of them dating back to the early 1800s when people lived off their land rather than renting or buying property outright like they do today There are no public buildings still standing from when Godfrey first started out as just a few homes but instead what we have are some local artifacts such as one old post office building and one old grain elevator still standing
