Today, Godfrey has several businesses that contribute to its economy including an ice cream parlor and general store as well as two high schools- one public and one private- which together have more than 2200 students enrolled. The community also enjoys music festivals each year throughout July/August including a summer parade along Main Street that features floats made from various items found within the town such as bicycles or kayaks; fireworks at night during their annual Fourth of July celebration; and "Gods" beerfest which takes place on Saturday evening near their firehouse using proceeds from local sales to support local charities

Godfrey was a small town in central Illinois, located on the west side of the bluff that forms the border between Normal and Peoria counties. It was founded in 1855 by Englishmen who had come to what is now Illinois as surveyors and businessmen. The town grew quickly, and by 1870 it had a population of over 1,000. In 1881, when Abraham Lincoln was elected president, Godfrey became one of his residencies. When Lincoln died in 1865, Godfrey's post office remained open until it closed in 1991. The town's history begins with its founding. On December 12, 1855, two men from London named Henry Greenough and John Gentry arrived at the mouth of the Kankakee River in present-day Kendall County to Surveyship Missouri Territory under the command of Major General Elijah Butler. They were followed by others soon after, including George Armstrong Custer and his brother James Averill Custer (1811-1879). The group consisted mostly of Englishmen who had been brought over as businessmen or surveyors because they offered potential settlers cheaper land than those available on the eastern continent. In order to settle this new land and promote agriculture among their new compatriots, some members of the party decided to name their new settlement for one of their countryman—Sir Godfrey Wellesley Grant (1794-1865)—the first Viscount Wellesley having married into an American family about 17 years earlier. Although there are no contemporaneous records mentioning this decision directly or even indirectly, it seems likely that some members felt that Grant would be more favorably remembered than any other European figure associated with early Illinois community development; he had been highly influential both politically and culturally within British North America during its nascent days.* Grant's naming also reflected his personal connections to England: he was actually educated at Eton College before coming to America where he played cricket for Cambridge University* After arriving at Springfield Township on November 1st*, Grant began organizing local businesses into companies which would offer produce door-to-door throughout Illinois territory; these early efforts would lead him eventually onto becoming one of Springfield's most successful entrepreneurs.* He also took part in developing important civic infrastructure such as a public school system which operated successfully untilifted countywide in 1861 following statehood* As well as being busy business man*, Grant also served briefly as Mayor of Springfield from 1865 to 1866(*). Although not without controversy (* due largely to charges brought against him by aldermen alleging graft*), he acquitted himself honorably during his two terms*.
