Godfrey, Illinois is a small town in McLean County, Illinois. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Godfrey were fur traders who called it "Goudiere" after one of their guides. French explorer Jean Nicolet arrived on July 22, 1763 and named the community for François Godefroy de la Tour d'Auvergne, Sieur de Goudieu (died 1785). A post office was organized in 1812 and remained in operation until 1846. In 1836, the town was renamed for General John Farragut as part of a larger name change for all McLean Counties under command of General Ulysses S. Grant during the Mexican-American War. In 1907, at a time when Missouri had become an American state and Illinois had not yetBecome a state, residents of Godfrey petitioned the State Board of Education to change their name to Springfield because they felt that Springfield would be more prominent than Godfrey in nearby states such as Missouri and Kentucky which were both still part of Mexico at this time. The board agreed and changed their name to Springfield on January 1st 1908. Godfrey has been home to many famous people including Drs. Martin Luther King Jr., Woodrow Wilson and Abraham Lincoln; however its most well-known resident may be current Mayor Donny Kuiper who was born there in 1951 but grew up in neighboring Urbana Heights before moving back to Godfrey in 2006 after serving eight years as mayor of Urbana Heights. Kuiper was elected from his first term on November 3rd 2009 with 54 percent of the vote becoming only the second mayor ever elected without winning over 50 percent since voting began online rather than by mail ballot which open only to citizens registered with Demographics Bureau registration forms or city council members registered with municipal clerk's office; he also became only the second mayor ever elected Tuesday night after becoming majority whip over two other candidates during floor debate preceding election day despite having no majority among registered voters (the first being then-Councilman Rick Sprague who ran unopposed) due to lack quorum requirements set by City Charter Amendment No 2 passed just prior thereto which stated that “No person shall be voted upon or appointed any officer or member thereof absent from full participation” .
