Godfrey also has several business businesses including a familyowned grocery store (), five convenience stores (), two funeral homes (), four gas stations (), six tractor dealerships (). French had been born in 1836 in Nonantum, Massachusetts, and had come to Illinois when he was just eighteen years old to help his family farm land. He soon realized that he wanted to be a farmer himself, so he started out by buying some land near Godfrey and began developing it into a town. When he died in 1897, his heirs decided that they would move the town onto their farmstead – which they did in 1898. The original residents of Godfrey were farmers who worked on the nearby farms while they awaited news of what would happen with their crops during World War I. Once the war ended, most of them returned home – but some stayed behind to start new businesses or raise children within the community they knew well. By 1925, there were over 200 people living in Godfrey; it was an thriving small city with its own schools and hospitals! During World War II, many people from around Illinois came to work at plutonium plants south of Chicago because those jobs were available only if you were able to have your driver’s license suspended! After the war ended though (and plutonium production stopped), many people left Godfrey for various reasons: joblessness was common after 1945; education wasn't as affordable as it had been before; there wasn't enough space or money available for new housing developments; etc.; but some kept their homes until finally sold them sometime between 1966-1984).
