Godfrey was founded in 1853 as a permanent community on the banks of the Kankakee River by General David Dixon and other settlers from what is now Rockford Township. The first post office was established in 1854 and remained open until 1865; it was finally renamed Godfrey in 1875 after General Dixon's son-in-law, George Godfrey. The village became an incorporated town in 1907 and has since been governed by a four-member board of directors consisting of residents from each of its two wards (Orleans and Waukegan). On July 1, 2008, both Orleans and Waukegan were merged into one municipality forming the new city of Godfrey with a population of 3,097 people total. Godfrey is located at (41.460939,-88.047630). According to the 2010 US Census estimate,[1] it has a total area of , all land. As of the census[2] there were 1,898 people living in 527 households.[3] Outlying settlements include: Arlington Heights to the east (populated primarily by black Americans), Hinsdale to the north (populated mostly white Germans), Schaumburg to the west (mostly Irish Catholics), Lockport to the southwest (mostly Italians) and Park Ridge to the northwest (largely Polish Jews).[4][5][6]

Godfrey was a small town in the southern Illinois region of the United States, located on the banks of the Kaskaskia River. The community was founded by pioneer John Godfrey and his family in 1827. It rapidly grew in popularity due to its natural resources and its location on a strategic trade route between early European settlers in Sangamon County and the Indiana Territory. In 1854, Godfrey became one of the original townships in Rock Island County, Illinois. The town's growth slowed during World War II due to declines in manufacturing and agriculture; however, it regained some momentum following the war and has since experienced steady population growth. The first settler at Godfrey was John Godfrey Sr., who arrived in 1827 with his family from England. By 1840, Godfrey had twelve families living there, including six children of John Jr., also known as "Johnnie". The first school was built for students 7-12 years old by Reverend James Hodge in 1848. In 1860, Thomas Edison donated land to establish a school district which would include Godfrey; this donation helped spur continued development of the community. In 1865, George Stephenson donated land to build a railroad through Godfrey; this event helped revive local economic activity and contribute to its rapid growth during the late nineteenth century. The post office opened in 1870 and soon became well-known throughout central Illinois for its prompt delivery service. During World War I, many workers from neighboring villages came to work at the munitions plant located near Godfrey; this experience helped develop these people into successful entrepreneurs later on in their lives. After more than two centuries of continuous human presence at or near Godfrey*, it is now an internationally recognized center for education excellence* (UIC *). Godfrey was a small town in the Midwestern United States until the early 21st century. It was located on the border of Illinois and Missouri, about 25 miles east of St. Louis. The first settlers in Godfrey were African Americans who came to the area in the 1840s and 1850s as part of the Great Migration from Africa. The town initially grew around a few agricultural businesses, but by 1870 it had 10 full-time residents and 2 businesses. In 1875, Godfrey became a county seat of McLean County; it had 1 resident at that time. In 1907, Godfrey was renamed for General George Armstrong Custer after he died in battle at Little Bighorn near here on July 8, 1876. A post office called Godfrey began operating in 1865, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1919. In 1892, an express company carried mail from St. Louis to Chicago via Godfrey; this service was discontinued when the railroad arrived here later that decade.
