Godfrey was a small town in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Kankakee River. Godfrey first came to prominence as a stop on the Underground Railroad during the American Civil War. Many escaped slaves settled in Godfrey after the war, including fugitive slave Harriet Tubman. The post office at Godfrey was founded in 1854, and remained in operation until it closed in 1906. The town grew rapidly during its early years, and by 1860 there were over 100 residents. In 1870, Godfrey had two stores and 12 homes; by 1900 it had 4 stores and 30 homes. In 1861 local farmer Amos Auld donated land for a Union military training camp known as Camp Butler; 8 miles north of Godfrey on Big Creek Road are today's barracks for that camp. One of the first buildings built at Camp Butler was an Episcopal church which served as a shelter for soldiers and their horses while they awaited transport back home across the river to Chicago or other southern destinations during the war. After Confederate General Robert Ewell's raid into central Illinois in April 1865 destroyed much of Springfield along with many Union citizens there began what is known as "The Great Migration". Over 160 thousand people crossed over from Kentucky, Tennessee, Virginia Commonwealth University (now Charlottesville), North Carolina, Georgia Peach Belt region – some going all the way through Iowa – before reaching Chicago on November 15th 1865. Most of these people went north to St Louis Park (Fulton Township) where they could find work building railroads or elsewhere in northern Illinois; however about 10% chose to head south to Peoria (Bloomington Township). Some Free Negroes who had fled slavery also made up this group; Abraham Lincoln himself donated $10 towards expenses for each black person caught crossing into Missouri via Indiana Territory Landing east of Warsaw on April 14th 1865- thus becoming one among many such refugee groups that reached northwestern Illinois following The great migration
