In 1920, it became a part of Kane County and remains so today. In 1978, the village of Godfrey merged with nearby Mount Sterling to form one municipal unit called Galesburg-Mt Vernon Micropolitan Statistical Area (GMA). That year also saw the opening of the first high school in this area: Mount Sterling High School (now known as South Side High School). Today, there are six churches in Galesburg-Mt Vernon Micropolitan Statistical Area: Christ United Methodist Church (built 1886), First Baptist Church (1892), Second Baptist Church (1899), Presbyterian Churches United States Of America Incorporated (1909), Evangelical Lutheran Synod - Northern Illinois Division (1916), and Holy Cross Catholic Parish #1 (1983). There is also a large grocery store and numerous restaurants within walking distance of most residents. This vibrant community offers excellent educational opportunities for its citizens through local public schools and private institutions; it also has wide access to cultural amenities including art galleries, theaters, music venues and more than 30 recreational activities outlets which include golf courses and fishing ponds..
