The town site was surveyed in 1840 by Joshua Chamberlain and named after Captain John Glen of the USS Constitution. A post office called Glenview was established in 1849, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1892, James Fenton and his wife Sarah Pemberton founded Glenview School District #1 which included the present-day city of GlenVIEW. In 1902, they added a second school to their district which became known as Montessori High School. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson announced that America would enter World War I; Green Bay Packers player George Halas donated $5,000 towards war effort (the largest donation ever made to an American sports team). At that time only men could volunteer for military service but soon women began to serve as nurses too. By 1918 there were over 2200 soldiers serving with the US military stationed here including many officers who later commanded units during World War II including General George Patton's Third Army Headquarters during its famous march through Germany

A post office was established here on December 26, 1854, under the name Hinrichsville; it closed on July 1, 1957. In 1865 Abraham Lincoln died while campaigning in nearby Springfield; soon after his death, his body was brought back to Chicago and placed inside Mount Auburn Cemetery before being transferred to Lake Michigan shoreline near Arlington Heights for burial.
