Glenview is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 33,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first European settlers in what would become Glenview were French traders and their families who arrived in 1795. They named the community after their landlord, Sir Robert Glen Lyon, 4th Baronet of Kempton Park. The town was founded in 1836 by Methodist Baptists from Kentucky as a fur-trading and agricultural center on the site of an old millrace that connected the Chicago River to Lake Michigan. The city was incorporated on December 14, 1868., and became one of the ten original cities in Cook County when it was created from part of Evanston Township on February 3, 1901. In 1960, Glenview became one of twenty-one municipalities within Chicago's newly formed Metropolitan Area. On October 1st of that year, it merged with neighboring Arlington Heights to form a new city called Glenview/Arlington Heights with a population of over 50,000 residents which continues to this day as two separate municipalities under one name or another (the latest being Glendale). Glenview has always been known for its high quality cotton crops due to its location on large ridges bordering corn fields that provide good drainage and help keep pests at bay; these crops have also provided much needed revenue for local civic organizations throughout its history including education initiatives like Grove City College and local hospitals like Advocate Christ Medical Center which are located just across Northwest Side streets from downtownGlenview’s signature building is Elmhurst Baptist Church located where Prairie Avenue meets Northwest Side Street & offers wonderful views of downtownChicago
Glenview is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,362 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was organized on December 21, 1868, from parts of town of Arlington Heights and parts of town of west Glenview. The original name for the village was "Glenview." In 1873, the village made an agreement with neighboring towns to share water resources in order to avoid flooding during heavy rains. On October 25, 1888, the first election for members of the Village Council took place. The polls were open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., and voting results were announced at 8 p.m.. On November 1st 1888, Glenview became a city by vote of residents over Mayor John Pritzker's objection; this event is documented as " anatomical change" in local history books due to changes in government structure which followed statehood in Illinois that year (Chicago had already become a city). The city limits changed again on March 1st 1893 when Evanston annexed Glenview into its boundaries- both villages lost their charter privileges as cities and were instead placed under common governance with titles such as Township (later Village) until January 1st 1898 when they regained their charter privileges effective that date and adopted new names such as City (June 12th 1898). On December 16th 1912 commissioners voted 5-2 to annex Racine into Glenview effective February 15th 1913 which again re-established common governance between villages with separate governing bodies until annexation by Cook County effective May 14th 1917 which reverted back to separate municipalities once more though still managed by City Commissioners until abolition effective June 5th 1933 finally becoming a single municipality once more through annexation by Cook County effective July 11th 1946 having previously been two municipalities under one governance
