The name "Glenview" first appeared on a map in 1837. At that time it was part of the Township of Rockford and was known as "Nigel's Plantation". In 1871, when Glenview became a city, it annexed much of the town of Rockford (including present-day Arlington Heights) and received its current name from James A. Glenview was founded on December 12th, 1836 by James and Eliza Robertson. The town name comes from "Glebe", which means "the clearing." For many years it was one of the most rural areas in Cook County and its residents were known as "The Glens". In 1892, when Glenview incorporated as a village, it had a population of 1,500. However, over time the village's population dwindled to just 1 hundred people until it reached its current size of 5,818 individuals in 2010. Glenview's history can be traced back to 1836 when James Robertson and his wife Eliza decided to settle down in what would become Glenview after spending several years travelling around Illinois looking for land to buy. They arrived in December of that year and soon started construction on their home which they named Glebe after their clearing where they would live and farm for the rest of their days. The Robertson's were not alone in founding this small town however; other early settlers included John Healy who built a cabin on what is now Main Street in 1840; David McNamara who started building houses on Oak Lawn Avenue in 1842; etcetera. In spite of its remote location and lack of amenities at the time (there were no roads or schools), Glebe quickly became known for its sturdy pioneer spirit and friendly community atmosphere - something that has been visible throughout its history from the earliest pioneers through to today's residents! Interestingly enough, much like many other small towns across America during this time period, Glebe struggled financially until lumber interests got interested in selling goods and services within its borders - eventually resulting in numerous businesses being opened up within minutes or even seconds walk from any individual homes! This type of economic development helped contribute significantly to Glebe becoming one of Illinois' most vibrant communities – an environment that continues to make an impact today despite experiencing some recent challenges (e.g., gentrification). One such challenge facing Glenview recently has been its high level of poverty – specifically amongst lower-income families with children - with rates totaling more than 50% among all households according to 2015 Census data! Despite this reality though,, there are also many residents who work hard everyday trying to keep things moving forward despite these challenges while still enjoying life inside their wonderful little community! In 1847, the first post office in Glenview was opened. The town was named for Colonel John Glenn who donated land to the town. In 1868, the first school in Glenview was built. It was a one-room building on the corner of 5th and East streets. In 1870, a two-story school building was built on State Street. In 1878, a three-story brick school building was built on Maple Street. The school closed in 1978 and is now used as a parking lot.
