In 1924–25 two blocks north of Central High School were developed into what is now called Glenridge Park - one of America’s earliest planned suburban neighborhoods. The original plan called for construction of four homes per block but only three were completed due to opposition from local residents who felt that their homes would become too high up in comparison with other properties in the park. One home remains standing today; it was built by entrepreneur Milton Siegel and named after him - Siegel Towers! Glenview was founded in 1854 by George C. Washington and his wife, Sarah. The town was named after the glen near where it was located. The first store in Glenview opened in 1855. By 1865, the population of the town had reached 581 people. In 1868, a post office was established in Glenview and remained in operation until 1906. In 1905, Glenview became a city and lasted until 1967 when it merged with Urbana to form Illinois University ofChicago.
