The first settlement in what is now Glenview was made by early Americans near present-day North Avenue and Milwaukee Street. The townspeople named their community after nearby Glendon Park, which they considered to be a most beautiful place. Glenview is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 44,010 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Chicago after Chicago Heights/Humboldt Park. The first European settlers in what is now Glenview were French colonists who founded the village of Lachine on the site of present-day Evanston in 1795. They named their new village after their home town of Glencoe, Scotland. In 1815, they renamed the village again to honor General James Wilkinson and his forces who had fought in the War of 1812. In 1835, Abraham Lincoln was elected as a Ulysses S. Grant candidate for President and moved to Springfield from Urbana to become Secretary of State under Governor William Hinsdale (1828–1846). When Grant became President, he appointed Lincoln's friend and fellow Illinoisan John Nicolay as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Nicolay served until 1865 when he resigned due to health concerns related to his prostate cancer diagnosis which he had been trysting with since before his election campaign began Lincoln then bought land adjacent to what would become Glenview from David Rice for $2 million in 1867 and donated it to the city for parkland and other public use; this area today includes much of north sideGlenbrook neighborhood including most of downtownGlenview proper although some acreage remains with Rice family descendants on it as well The City Council voted unanimously on May 8th, 1893 to name one block near South Michigan Avenue “President George Washington’s Walk” in commemoration of that event This dedication brought about controversy as there was no living president at that time (George Washington died three years earlier) but local historian Harry Buell suggests that it may have been an inadvertent reference lessening Obama’s political standing rather than any real tribute or historical significance given that George Washington had no direct connection whatsoever with either Glendale or Glenway Township
Glenview was organized as a village in 1855, and became a city in 1907. The population of Glenview increased from about 1,200 in 1855 to more than 5,000 by 1907.
