Glenview was organized as a village on February 17, 1853, from parts of the town of Arlington Heights and the township of Evanston. The original plat for Glenview included land that now includes much of what is today known as north Glenview Township and east Glendale Township. According to the 2010 census, there are 8,769 people living in Glenview Village: 7,822 in single-family homes; 289 in apartments; and 914 in other buildings. The village has a total area of . After the war ended, most of these men returned home but some stayed behind and founded the town of Carbondale (later Wheaton) around 1865-1867 as a post-war relocation project for veterans from Illinois' Union Army units fighting for General Ulysses S Grant during the American Civil War. Some businesses that operated within Glenview during its early years include: an inn run by John Cramer from 1840-1841; a blacksmith shop operated by Charles Henson from 1847-1848; an apothecary store operated by Elijah Matson from 1830-1831; a school house operated by David Shearer from 1827-1828; and two stores opened within minutes' walk each other on Elmira Avenue between 1850s - one called "The Girdle" (owned by Jacob Weiland) which served as an protovelocity grocery store before becoming known as Market Lane Grocery Store & Brewery c1901 while another store called The Emporium (owned by Nicholas Pevsner), which became known as The Mercantile Depot after taking over business at Aurora & Erie Streets corner circa 1903/04). From 1865 to 1870 there also existed two wagon roads running through Glen View - one led northward along present day Arlington Heights Road then eastward along present day South Main Street past current day Glendale Cemetery then continuing northwest via present day First National Bank Building then turning southeast onto Dickinson Road pastpresent day White Castle Restaurant before terminating at Lake Michigan just south of where today's Interstate 88 meets I-94 Boulevard . A tavern licensed under this moniker may have been located at or near Elmira Avenue & North First Street between 1865 - 1870 but no evidence has been found to support this claim."
