Gregory opened up much of glenwood with his corn crop before moving back to Illinois in 1872 due to health concerns caused by eating high levels of corn pollen found throughout the area19 years earlier during an epidemic that swept throughglenwooditselfand other partsofthe MidwestcalledtheGreatPlagueof1865-67.(Gregory had been born into a wealthy family that owned several thousand acres (3 km2) aroundChicago.) In 1898, James Whelan erected a millrace called "Whetstone Falls", which enters GlenVIEW Creek near present day Danville Township. This waterfall provided power for local mills until 1971 when it was replaced by an electric plant having an installed capacityNPROf285 MW(megawatts). In 1911 the villages of Glendale and Danville merged into one municipality under the name Glen View. On July 15th 1942 residents voted 3-1 against annexing unincorporated portions of Cook County northward including most significantly Berwyn Heights located just outside modern-day LombardtownshipwestofGlennviewcity limits.(Berwyn Heights annexation proposal would have added some 30 square miles (100 km2))toGlennviewcitylimits without input from residents). In 1945 Glenn View became part of Chicago fully amalgamated with all its suburbs within Chicagoland government structure.(Today there are only two original neighborhoods remaining: North Side & South Side although plans are underway to create more.) In 1870, Glenview became one of six townships within Cook County, Illinois, and it remained an important part of that county until it merged with neighboring Willowdale into Cook County in 1955.
