The population of the City of Glenview was 727,813 as of 2010. The history of Glenview can be traced back to 1836 when it was founded by George Hahn and his wife Catharine. At that time, it was known as "The Village". In 1853, a school called Elmhurst was built on land donated by Dr. John Biddle. Elmhurst remained in use until 1956 when it became a daycare center. In 1865, Rev. Elijah Price formed a community church called First Baptist Church which remains active today. After Reverend Price's death, his son Charles Price took over leadership of First Baptist Church and renamed it Glenview Methodist EpiscopalChurch in 1903). In 1905, developers named William Potter and Julius Weil bought 400 acres (160 km2) north of town for $5,000 and began construction on what would become known as the Potter Mill Project. The mill would produce flour for local businesses and would also be used to make cheese, bacon, eggs, butter, soap and other products from raw materials brought into town by wagon trainloads from miles away. The mill opened in 1907 and continued to operate until 1971 when it was closed due to lack of business interest following technological advances that made production more efficient elsewhere. The city has experienced many changes throughout its history including being annexed by Chicago in 1890; becoming part of McHenry County after being split off from DuPage County in 1912; experiencing rapid growth during World War II with an increase in population from 11 percent to over 50 percent; declining growth following the war; becoming part of Kane County after Kane County was created within McHenry County; experiencing rapid growth again following the recession caused bythe Great Recession; becoming an integral part of Chicago after Rahm Emanuel became Mayor in 2013; experiencing continuing decline with increasing violencekhmer-owned businesses going out of business while jobs go offshore non-profit organizations are struggling to keep up with rising costs associated with living within a large urban area such asChicago);and finally enduring declines through 2014 before stabilization through 2015
Glenview was originally a small village in Kane County, Illinois, located on the east side of the river. In 1857, it became the site of the first commercial establishment in what is now Glenview Township. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s as farmers developed their land around the railroad station and other businesses. The population peaked at around 3,000 in 1910 and declined gradually over the next few decades. By 1920, Glenview had only about 200 residents. It officially ceased to exist as a municipality on November 15th, 1925 when its last mayor resigned after being elected to Congress from Illinois's 1st District.
