Glenview is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,822 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. The name "Glenview" derived from two early settlers who named their land after their home country of Scotland: John Glen and his wife Mary (née Burnett). The first Europeans to visit what is now Glenview were surveyors working for the Indiana Land Company in 1818. They map out a township, called "Muncie Township", that included present-day Glenview and portions of other townships in 1824. In 1839, when Illinois became a state, portions of current-day Glenview Township were taken to make up the new city of Chicago. In 1895, the village of Glenview was platted and named after its founder John J. McCormick Sr., who had purchased large tracts of land thereabouts from various farmers during the 1850s as part of an effort to develop an agricultural center on Cook County's far north side east of Chicago Heights. McCormick had also donated money for building a town hall and schoolhouse in what are now parts of downtown Glenview. In 1907, additional sections west of Lake Michigan were added to form what would eventually become known as Northglenn; this addition increased the size of GlenVIEW by more than 20%. In 1914, another section westward from West Side Highway (now I-90) was annexed into the town limits making it even larger still with a population total approaching 2,000+. In 1919–1920 developer Harry Blackman built one million square feet (100 hectares) or more inside then existing boundaries - including many homes still standing today within downtown - creating what would come to be known as 'the Blackman Belt'. This development led directly to job growth in downtown which continued through much post-World War II recession until suburbanization began wiping out jobs in central Illinois following the end Of The Cold War and retirement waves among Baby Boomers beginning in the late 1970s and 1980s.
