The first settler of Glenview was John Griggs who arrived from Connecticut on October 14, 1814. The town site was surveyed by George Washington Kapp and sold to Nathan Hale on January 12, 1825 for $5 per acre (that is, $100). On July 10, 1830, David Rice purchased 1/2 mile (3 km) east of the village center from Griggs for $10 per acre (that is $160). He named the land "Rice's Prairie" after his brother-in-law Samuel Rice. Ichabod Crane built a log cabin near what is now Elm Street on December 2nd, 1830. Ichabod Crane ran a mill here until 1840 when he moved to Cedarville to farm there. In 1847 Amos Crosby bought 1/4 mile (0.6 km) south of present day Wacker Drive from Rufus King for $10 per acre (that is $320). He called it "Crosby's Prairie". In 1850 he donated this land to the Village of Glenview for use as open space and public buildings. In 1857–58 James Kinzie improved much of what later became known as Leland Avenue betweenpresent day Sixty-fifth Street and Fifty-seventh Street west of Park Boulevard; today that section forms part of I-55 corridor west of Chicago's central business district. Kinzie also founded Kinzie Institute which still operates in Glenview today with over 100 Institutes across North America

Glenview was founded in 1838 by James Glen and his wife, Ann. The original home of the Glen family was a log cabin on the edge of a clearing that is now Park Square. In 1840, the Glen family moved to what is now the east side of town. James Glen became a successful merchant and built a large home at 6th and State Streets. He also built the first post office in Glenview. In 1851, he married Emma Willoughby and together they developed another important business interest- farming land around Park Square. In 1863, James Glen purchased 180 acres of land south of Park Square from John Wirth for $1,500 cash. This land became known as "The Woods". The Glens continued to farm there until their death in 1903. Their son George Glenn took over the farm operation and it continues to this day. In 1865, James Glenn served as Mayor of Glenview while his father was Governor of Illinois. In 1868 he married Sarah Pratt who was also mayor at the time. They had two children: George Glenn (1869-1957) and Sarah Jane (1871-1949). In 1897, William McKinley was elected President of America and one year later Congress passed an act providing for voting rights for African Americans in all states except Georgia which did not allow them to vote until after Reconstruction ended in 1865 following the American Civil War
