When people think of Glenview, they typically think of the grocery store. But before Grocery Outlet Glenview was a community that sported more than just a few stores. It had two, and the first one opened in 1881. The second store was built on land that is now part of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign campus. The Gun Hammer company got its start in 1916 when George Wesson founded it with his three sons to produce hammers for gunsmiths and other toolmakers. Hammers were an important piece of toolmaking equipment during the 1800s and early 1900s because they were used to drive screws into wood to hold it in place while you machined it or screwed it down to a post for stability. And even today, hammers are still used extensively by gunsmiths and others who need to drive screws into metal parts for assembly or repair. But as Hammer manufacture grew, so did their competition from other companies who produced similar tools including Smith & Wesson and Colt Firearms Company. In 1942, however, Gun Hammer merged with Smith & Wesson Corporation creating what is considered to be one of the most successful firearms manufacturers in history. Today, Gun Hammer continues to produce quality hammers at its headquarters in Glenview – home of the world’s first hammer-gun safety system – as well as several other brands throughout North America.

Glenview has been home to many famous people including America's first Prime Minister John Quincy Adams (1767–1845), who lived here during his childhood; musician George Harrison (1935–2001); baseball coach Lou Gehrig (1914–2007); entrepreneur Jay Pritzker (1965–present); actor Ned Beatty (1946–2006).
