Glenview was founded as a farmstead on May 1, 1847 by George Wm. Glenn and his wife Elizabeth (née Hennigan). The original settler's name was given to the tract of land because it had been donated by James Kapp for their use. At first, all activities were conducted from the farmstead; however, eventually a village was formed from parts of Glenview and other settlements along the Great Western Railroad leading to Chicago. In 1872, grazers who owned large tracts of land in what is now Glenview began to lease these parcels out to farmers for grazing purposes; this led to Glenview becoming an agricultural center with property leased out for farming and manufacturing purposes as well as light industry such as flour milling and shipbuilding. The town became rapidly industrialized during World War II when many businesses located there produced materials needed for war production such as munitions and aircraft parts. During the 1950s through 1970s growth slowed due to high levels of unemployment and crime rates in nearby suburbs; however, growth resumed during the late 1980s with establishment of new industries including paper processing plants and clothing factories until 2000 when they closed due to competition from online retailers. In recent years much development has occurred within GlenVIEW itself with construction projects taking place near downtown including a new hospital which opened in fall 2009; an $8 million dollar library/community center project whichopened in summer 2013; and plans are underway for another healthcare facility that would add over 100 jobs across various areas including outpatient care, office work space and residential units once completed

The town of Glenview was platted in 1851, and named after their home town of Glencairn, Scotland. By 1870, over 1000 people lived in Glenview. In 1865, the first school in Glenview opened its doors.
