One year later Walsh was elected to serve out his full term as Mayor before becoming a U.S. Senator from Illinois; he remains the last openly gay member of Congress from Illinois today. From 1961 until his death in 1987 John Fenton served as Chairman of both houses of the City Council representing Glenview Village/O'Hare Township collectively before being succeeded by his son Robert Fenton who also served on city council for over 20 years until his retirement in 2009 effective December 1st 2009 In recent years much focus has been placed upon McHenry County including nearby Rockford which has seen dramatic growth due to heavy manufacturing jobs moving out into surrounding suburbs while downtown Rockford slowly lost its commercial appeal due to various factors such as traffic congestion and lack of open space . However much work still needs to be done especially given that McHenry County ranks 45th out of 50 counties nationwide for job creation
