Glendale Heights, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 36,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1876 by James E. Glidden and his brothers-in-law Chauncey M. Howe and George H. Nichols as a small farming community on the west side of Chicago. By 1925, Glendale Heights had a population of over 50,000 people and became one of the largest communities in Cook County with an incorporated status. In 1955, Glendale Heights annexed parts of Westchester County to its north and began rapid growth into what is now one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Illinois with a wide range of cultures represented among its residents. From 1965 until 2001 it was considered one of Chicagos " wards". The name "Glendale Heights" comes from two sources: firstarily from General James Eglinton's roughhousing tactics when he lived there during the American Civil War; secondly from English vernacular usage meaning "a glen or wooded hillock." The town site was surveyed by Wm Fenton in 1836 and he named it after his sister-in-law Elizabeth (née Green). After her death in 1837, her husband John Green conveyed land to WmFenton that would form part of Glendale Heights proper; this land extended from Rte 84 across Glenwood Avenue eastward to Pkwy 287 southbound (now Edwards Road). In 1878 James Eglinton acquired 4 square miles (10 km²) on the west Side which included present day Glendale Heights proper; this property extended along Glenwood Avenue from Rte 84 eastward to Pkwy 287 southbound (now Edwards Road). Mr. Eglinton renamed his new community “Glendale” after himself because he felt “the name would be more prominent here than at any other place where they [the inhabitants] could call their own” (Curtis & Kappler 5th ed., pgs 452–453). At that time only men were allowed to live within “Glendale” limits so women were not mentioned until 1880 when Mrs Jane Morton moved into unit No 2 following her marriage to John Morton who also resided within those boundaries (5th ed., pgs 458–459). A post office called White Sands opened on November 1st 1850 at 1750 Niles Ave which served residents inside and outside “Glendale” limits until it closed on September 8th 1861 due to low mail volume (-9 mails/year) (-4% for all U.S.)(Morton 9th ed., pgs 213–214)). James Daugherty purchased 3 square miles (8 km²) including present day Glendon Hills on July 10th 1886 from Mr. Jens Slote(Daugherty 7th ed., pg 563); this property extends along Glenwood Avenue from Rte 84 eastward to Pkwy 287 southbound (now Edwards Road). On December 12nd 1886 Oscar Wilde married Miss Emma Goldman before moving into his new home located at 655 Lexington Ave (#734), just beyond Dearborn Street(Greenwald 10 th ed., pg 401–402)(Greenwald 9 th ed., pg 214)). Oscar Wilde's home later became known as Bronte Hall((Daugherty 7th ed., pg 570)). After years of development it wasn't until 1901 when Chicago enacted its zoning ordinance that residential developments could take place within what are today known as streets such as Hawthorne Boulevard or Woodlawn Avenue without having their borders defined by woods or hills ((Morton 9 th ed., pg 214)). With this change came increased competition for jobs between downtown businesses and neighborhoods like Ridgemont which resulted in many smaller businesses being forced out onto Girard Avenue between Wabash Street and South Shore Drive((Wojcikowski 2 nd trans.). rename your business?
