In 1969 Glendale Heights merged with Highland Park to form a new corporate entity known as Chicago-Glendale Heights Retail Merchants Association (CHARA).
Glendale Heights, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 28,782 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Glendale Heights" comes from the Glendale Township in which it is located and from Englishman George Herbert's play of the same name. The town was founded in 1892 by James Haughton and his wife Mary Eldridge Haughton as a small farming community on the site of what is now Glendale Hills Shopping Center. By 1908, Glendale Heights had developed into a substantial agricultural center with over 100 businesses and 5 churches. In 1930, when Prohibition ended and alcohol sales were banned across Illinois, many farmers decided to move their operations to another state or even to stop production altogether and become retail wine merchants. A few years later however, steel production became an important factor in Glendale Heights' economy and led to more business development around that time including several large industrial companies such as Bethlehem Steel (now Rahm Emanuel's former employer) which built a new steel mill on a bend in the river near Glendale Boulevard. The mills produced heavy machinery for factories all over northern Illinois until they closed down during World War II due to competition from overseas plants; however, some preserved relics of these industries can still be seen today at nearby Fox Valley Technical High School where parts of an old-fashioned rivet gun are exhibited (itself based on an actual device used by Union forces during the Civil War). In recent decades much emphasis has been placed on becoming an attractive community with high-quality public schools and easy access to job opportunities outside of Chicago – two issues that have taken center stage in debates about whether or not Glendale Heights should secede from the city limits entirely. However despite these challenges there has been steady growth throughout most of this period with population increasing by 3% per year between 2000 and 2010 while employment only increased by 1%. Glendale Heights is a census-designated place in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,531 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was first settled by German immigrants in 1855 and became known as "Munster Township." In 1871, it was renamed to Glendale Heights after the then-new city of Glendale, Georgia. The name stuck and the township continued to be named for its original location until it lost its charter in 1955. In 1936, Glendale Heights was annexed by the City of Chicago; however, the annexation did not take effect until 1961 due to a legal challenge from residents who contended that they were always intended to be part of Glendale Heights. The community has been growing steadily since then and now has over 17% of all housing units in Cook County. It is home to many high-end businesses such as Apple Inc., Menard's Supermarket (now Kroger), Comcast SportsNetChicago channel 22 and Philipsburg Elementary School which opened in 2002. Today, there are still some German immigrants living onglen heights but their descendants no longer speak their language fluently or attend school there although they continue to live hereabouts with their families. There are also plenty of other cultures represented including Italian people who have migrated here from Italy beginning in the early 20th century and Mexican immigrants who have come since NAFTA went into effect in 1994%. Some recent arrivals include Haitians who immigrated starting around 2000 when an earthquake hit Haiti causing widespread damage which led some people hereto start arriving for work purposes rather than just escaping natural disasters like Hurricane Katrina had done before them).
Glendale Heights was incorporated as a village on May 2, 1892. The village's first mayor was J.F. Shea and its first treasurer was Wm. C. Hickey. On January 1, 1903, Glendale Heights became a town under the terms of the General Settlement Plan of 1893. In 1959, the name of Glendale Heights was changed to Chicago Park Ridge after the merger of neighboring towns in Cook County.
