The Glendale Heights, Illinois community began as a small farming village in the early 1800s. The first settler in what is now Glendale Heights was John Stephenson, who arrived in 1812. By 1827, the population of Glendale Heights had grown to over 100 residents. In 1857, the village became a separate township and continued to grow until it reached its current size by 1950. While most of the original settlers from England were unable to find work on their new homesteads in America, many of them did manage to make some contributions to the growth of Glendale Heights. For example, Reverend Thomas Lovejoy established a religious congregation which ministered to local farmers and fishermen; John Stephenson donated land for a school; and Caleb Dearborn Mormon pioneers constructed an agricultural complex known as Logan House on land that they donated. As time passed, more and more people immigrated to America – including many Germans who had fled anti-Semitism in Europe – andGlendale Heights slowly assimilated into American society. The community's well-known landmarks include Stonington Avenue (now Elm Street), The Lakeshore Hotel (now right next door to Sears), Robert Lewis Stevenson Elementary School (now Gibson Elementary), Stonington Park (now part of Community Ridge) and numerous churches that remain today such as Catholics, Protestants and Jews. Today, Glendale Heights continues its strong cultural identity with multiple annual events such as "Festival du Jour" which features food trucks from all over Chicago during the day while nightlife takes place at various venues throughout town; "American Pie Day" which celebrates classic pies from different regions around the country; "Bagel Days" each summer where people gathered at various locations for traditional GLHBA fare; as well as numerous art exhibitions, music festivals and other activities unique to this small but vibrant community.
The earliest reference to Glendale Heights can be found in a deed from 1685. The land was owned by the Carew family and is located on the south side of Chicago. In 1837, it was granted to Amos Kendall. He named his farm "Kendall's Corners" after himself and his brother-in-law, Amos Kendall Sr., who had also donated the land. The first Post Office in Glendale Heights was established in 1859. It was moved to its current location in 1865. Glendale Heights experienced rapid growth during the early 20th century as manufacturing jobs left Chicago for new locations across Illinois and out into the country. Many of these new residents brought their families with them, which helped contribute to an increased population density in Glendale Heights that remain today. During World War II, many of Glendale Heights' factories were used to produce munitions for the war effort; however, most of these have since closed down and are now considered ghost towns. In recent years, some residents have startedto callGlendale Heights home because of its highly relaxed lifestyle and great access to nature resources like trails and lakes (although there are still a few busy commercial businesses). Additionally, many small businesses have been established around town that provide services such as catering or real estate; making it one of the more vibrant areas in town.
