Glendale Heights is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded by General Philip Sheridan in 1847 as a site for a post office and military garrison. In 1881, Glendale Heights became a city when it was annexed by Chicago. According to the 2010 census, Glendale Heights has 9,848 residents. The racial makeup of Glendale Heights is 82% White (non-Hispanic), 14% African American, 0% Native American, and 8% Asian Pacific Islander. Hispanic or Latino of any race make up 1% of the population. As of the 2000 U.S Census there were 827 households out of which 362 (26%) had children under the age of 18 living with them, 439 (30%) were married couples living together, and 208 (12%) had a female householder with no husband present. There were 141 unmarried opposite-sex partnerships; 26 same-sex married couples or partnerships; and 10 total families (6%). 535 people (37%) lived in owner occupied housing units and 174 people (15%) lived in rental housing units

It became a city in 1933 and was renamed after Julius Rosenwald's son, Arthur Glenwood Glendale Heights. The population increased to 24,824 by 2010.
The town of Glendale Heights, Illinois was founded on December 6, 1841 by settlers from Pennsylvania. The town was named after the Glendale Preserve estate in Los Angeles County where many of the early settlers had lived. The first post office in Glendale Heights was established on July 1, 1842. In 1865, the town became a village and was renamed Glen Ellyn. On January 1, 1968, Glen Ellyn merged with neighboring Villa Park to form the current city of Chicago.
