The village had two churches: First Presbyterian Church (founded 1851) and Second Presbyterian Church (founded 1865). In 1872, George Westphal bought land southeast of Glendale Heights from James Jervis for $10,000. Westphal built a gristmill, sawmill, post office and other buildings that still stand today on his property. In 1893–1894, Wistar College opened its doors as one of two private colleges in Chicago with men only admitted as students. In 1924–1925Glencoe Elementary School opened which became an anchor school for the community before being replaced by K–12 schools in 2002 when taxpayer funding was diverted from public education to vouchers for religious schools statewide
