Glendale Heights, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 31,859 at the 2010 census. The name "Glendale Heights" comes from Glendon Avenue and Harry Belafonte Avenue. The first Europeans to visit what is now Glendale Heights were French traders in the early 17th century. Jesuit missionaries arrived in 1797 and built a mission on the present-day campus of Northwestern Illinois University. In 1824 a group of Englishmen seeking land west of Chicago founded the town of Aurora on land they had discovered near Glendale Heights. Aurora's incorporation as a city in 1847 helped give rise to the nickname "The City of Roses." During World War II, Glendale Heights became one of the largest Portuguese enclaves in North America as American prisoners-of-war were held there by Brazilian authorities. After the war, many people moved into Glendale Heights from other parts of Cook County and Illinois due to its good schools and safe neighborhoods. One reason for this growth was that job opportunities within areas such as engineering and manufacturing blossomed during these postwar years; these jobs brought much economic stability to towns throughout Cook County during tough times. Glendale Heights is a village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The village was organized on November 15, 1871 from parts of Hoffman Estates and Streamwood. Glendale Heights was named for George S. Glidden who donated land for the village and also served as its first postmaster. The name "Gleason" had been in use in Hoffman Estates since 1851 and it had been applied to other villages before that including Streamwood where it had belonged to John Gleason until his death in 1858. The Village of Glendale Heights voted to become an incorporated municipality on October 3, 1955 when all but one seat were taken by those who lived within walking distance of the village clerk's office which then resided at 625 N State Street (now known as Glendale Hills Boulevard). On November 3, 1955 the last seat went to Danita M. Kincaid with 521 total votes against incorporation while two other women - Mary Lou McDonald and Eleanor Holmes Norton - each received three votes. On December 2, 1957 amendments were passed by the Village Board which made several changes including adding a fire department; increasing corporate size from twenty-five members to fifty-nine; giving voting privileges not just to residents but also employees of businesses within one thousand feet of their establishments; and setting out guidelines for zoning which would be used for future development proposals by the village board itself rather than through separate zoning committees set up by individual businesses or neighborhoods within the city limits of Chicago
Beginning in the early 1800s, Glendale Heights was an agricultural community. The first settlers were farmers who arrived in the area during the 1820s. The community developed slowly until it became a city in 1906. At its peak, Glendale Heights had over 50,000 residents and was home to several large businesses and institutions. However, following World War II, the town lost much of its population and importance due to addrutions growth in nearby Crystal Lake and Wheaton.
