Glendale Heights is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. The name "Glendale Heights" is derived from Glendon House which was built in 1892 and later moved to its current location. The first village in Glendale Heights was started by residents of the towns of Wheaton and Skokie on November 3, 1884. This village ceased to exist when it merged with Glenview on May 12, 1886. The first post office in Glendale Heights was established on October 6, 1888. In 1912, Glendale Heights incorporated as a village and became one of the few villages in Cook County that did not have any white residents until after World War II when more African Americans arrived. In 1963, the Chicago Park District bought most of the land east of Pulaski Road from the Village for $1 million and donated it to Glendale Heights for use as their community park. It has been called the "Community Park District's largesse" because it has given away over 100 acres (40 hectares) of land within Glendale Heights since its creation. On September 11th, 1965 an incendiary bomb exploded near FBI Headquarters located at 5235 Wabash Avenue killing three people including two agents working inside: James Egan and John Lennon Jr.. Lennon had lunched at a restaurant just down the street from FBI headquarters that day and arranged to meet some friends there before flying into Los Angeles to record his song “Beautiful Boy (Darling Boy)” There are several theories about why this bomb went off; one theory suggests that someone insideFBI headquarters may have turned their back on Lennon while he ate his lunch; another theory suggests that someone outside may have been trying to set off an explosion using parts they had found nearby; still others believe that thisbombwasof random significanceand merely caused damage rather than kill anyone

Glendale Heights was platted in 1881 as a village and was incorporated as a town on November 3, 1902. The name "Glendale Heights" honors Edwin Fenton Glidden (1833-1911), an American educator and president of the University of Chicago. The first settlers to Glendale Heights were family members of George Washington Shriver who came overland from Kentucky in late 1837. They founded the community near what is now Elmhurst Avenue and Pulaski Road on land that they purchased from Captain John Smith and his wife Hannah Potts for $2,500 cash. Shriver's brother-in-law Thomas Lane bought another 10 acres (4 ha) adjacent to the original site in 1841 and laid out streets which continue to this day including Arlington Avenue, Prospect Avenue, Glencoe Boulevard, Skokie Boulevard, Woodlawn Avenue . In 1892–93 two men by the name of Post built a frame house on what is now Elmwood Avenue just east of Glencoe Boulevard; it remains one of Glendale Heights' most visible landmarks today. post & Sons grocery store opened its doors on December 12th 1893 with local grocer J H Post serving as its first employee
