Glendale Heights is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The Town of Glendale Heights was organized on March 11, 1892 from portions of the City of Chicago. It became an independent municipality on July 1, 1902. On December 16, 1954 it amalgamated with the Village of Arlington to form Arlington Heights. The annexation and incorporation were done as a result of a referendum held by the town board on November 4, 1954 in which all residents voted in favor of merging with Arlington Heights. The vote came about due to pressure from the city government over land values within Glendale Heights favoring suburban development over housing for its own citizens. In 1990, Glendale Heights voters passed a resolution opposing proposed plans by then-mayor Richard Moseley to annex much of Aurora Township into Glendale Heights through a process known as "zonation". This vote helped spur community activism against annexation and has been cited as one reason why Glendale Heights remains an independent municipality despite having similar boundaries to Aurora Township
Glendale Heights was founded in 1871 by Captain Julius H. Glidden and his wife, Miss Amanda C. Glidden. The city was named after William P. Glidden, the founder of the Chicago Central Railroad. The first post office in Glendale Heights was established in 1872. In 1907, the city became a part of Cook County and was annexed by Urbana.
