Glen Ellyn, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 392 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Glen Ellyn" is derived from a Shawnee word meaning "place of sweet corn." Glen Ellyn first appeared on maps as early as 1815 when James Ketchum entered into an agreement with three other men to purchase 160 acres (72 hectares) of land in what is now Glen Ellyn Township. In 1825, John Fritchey bought out Ketchum's share and became the first white settler in what would become Glen Ellyn Township. Fritchey named his new township after him - George Washington Glenn. By 1830, most of present-day Glen Ellyn had been surveyed and purchased by citizens of Chicago; however, Robert Ewing remained proprietor of the large parcel east of I-55 which he called Elmwood. In 1832, Robert Ewing donated this plot to the city for use as a parkland; Elmwood Park was later renamed in his honor. In 1839, Abraham Lincoln visited Glen Ellyn for two days while on his way to Springfield, Ill., where he delivered a speech before a crowd of farmers and businesspeople on Main Street near present-day Pemberton Road. That same year, Abraham Lincoln married Mary Todd Lincoln at Elmhurst Baptist Church in nearby Elmhurst Cemetery; their only child was born two years later, President Lincoln’s only son – Edward Herndon Blair Booth Jr.. In 1865–1866 there were several skirmishes between Union troops and Confederate cavalry nearpresent-day Pemberton Road and East Mifflin Avenue during the American Civil War; these skirmishes are sometimes referred to as "The Glen Elwyn Incident". On July 5th 1865 during one such skirmish Union Major General Nathan Bedford Forrest engaged Confederate Cavalry Captain Samuel Jourdan at approximately four miles (6 km) northeast of present-day Glendale Heights off US 131 just south of Prairie View A&P Store). After some intense fighting Forrest ordered his troopers to retire without further damage or injury to their mounts; however Jourdan continued pursuit and soon lost sight of Forrest leading his horse back into Illinois Wilderness beyond wooded areas today known as Oak Forest . This encounter effectively ended any hope that Union forces might have regained control over central Illinois following the end of hostilities that day This event has been cited variously as marking one point in history when Union forces finally successfully regained control over central Illinois or even proving that General Nathan Bedford Forrest could not be suppressed by superior numbers despite being outnumbered 3:1 according to official sources

Glen Ellyn, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,872 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Glen Ellyn" comes from a place in Scotland called Glen Urquhart which means "the glen where the trees are high." In 1847, an act of Congress passed to incorporate the town by lot and named it for President James K. Polk who had been living in Springfield at the time. The first post office was established in Glen Ellyn on October 1, 1853. The first store opened in 1857 and operated as a general store for several years before becoming a grocery store. In 1860, an agricultural fair was held at Glen Ellyn and featured exhibits from around Illinois as well as representatives from Canada and Mexico. A local doctor read extracts from medical journals while demonstrations were given by physicians from other states on how to cure various diseases. In 1865-66, work began on building what would become known as DeKalb County Courthouse which was completed two years later on November 12th, 1867. At this time (and through several changes), Glen Ellyn served as the county seat of DeKalb County until that county's creation in 1896 when Park Ridge became its new county seat. One of the most significant events during early Glen Ellyn history occurred when Drury College moved to its present location near downtown in 1902 after authorized buildout of their previous site just north of Uptown on West Union Street (now Sheridan Road). This move signaled Richmond's departure as the educational capital of Chicagoland and helped create what has come to be known as "The University District". During World War II, Glennon Army Ammunition Plant located within town limits produced munitions used throughout North America including those used in Hiroshima and Nagasaki – one of many sites across Cook County affected by aerial bombing during World War II! The plant closed following hostilities but reopened briefly again during 1994-96 following extensive rehabilitation/branding under then Mayor Richard Mieschke – making it one of only six plants nationwide still open today!
