Glen Ellyn, Illinois is a city in the U.S. state of Illinois and the county seat of Cook County. The population was 73,812 as of 2018. It is located on the north shore of Lake Michigan and is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1847 by immigrants from Ireland who were looking for a new home after experiencing religious persecution in their homeland. The name Glen Ellyn comes from a place called "Gleann an Eala" which means "the green field". The first settlers arrived in 1851 and built what would become the first post office in Glen Ellyn - called simply "Glen". In 1855, they named their new city after Sir Walter Scott's classic novels, Scotland Yard and Loch Leven respectively. In 1898, Glen Ellyn became one of 24 communities that formed Cicero Township. In 1906, it merged with neighboring Park Ridge to form Glenbrook Village (later renamed Oak Lawn).Clarence Daley served as mayor from 1940 to 1948 and 1954 to 1958; he also served as chairman of Cook County Democratic Party from 1951 to 1957 before becoming Mayor Richard J. Daley's running mate forGovernor Richard Murnane during his successful run for the Ulysses S Grant presidency in 1968. After Daley's death, his son Ray Daley took over as mayor until his retirement in 2003. On November 3rd 1922, President Herbert Hoover signed into law Prohibition-era Bootlegging Reform Bill No 2 into law at a press conference at Howard Johnson’s Hotel at 106th Street and Oak Lawn Avenue – making Glen Ellyn one of only two cities within Cook County that had not yet ratified Prohibition legislation despite being adjacent thereto (the other was Northbrook). This event marks the beginning of organized bootlegging activity within Glen EllYNia according to some historians while others claim this was more likely done due to politics than anything else since most residents were still opposed to prohibitionism at this point

Glen Ellyn, Illinois is a small town located in central Illinois. The population was 5,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Glen Ellyn" comes from a Scottish word meaning "hill and glen." The first settlers in what is now Glen Ellyn were farmers who came to the area in the mid-19th century. They started out as homesteaders and began growing corn, beans, and other crops. By the early 20th century, however, many of the original settlers had moved away and their descendants live today in nearby towns such as Elgin and Wheaton. The history of Glen Ellyn goes back to 1836 when two brothers named John and James McDonald set up a farmstead on land that they had purchased from Paddy Walsh. In 1848, another brother named John McDonald Jr. arrived and also set up a farmstead hereabouts. In 1857, an Indian party led by Chief Black Hawk attacked several farms near present-day Glen Ellyn and burned them down; this event is often cited as starting the war between United States Indians and European settlement in this area. At some point during this period there were also holdings here by Anthony McNamara (1793-1872), David Wills (1820-1900), George Bemis (1827-1906), Daniel Boone (1776-1846), Archibald Macdonald (1801-1868), Cornelius Vanderbilt (1784-1853), Johann Gottfried Schrader (1775-1855) & others. In 1871, Abraham Lincoln was elected President of the United States; he traveled to Illinois to campaign for his opponent Andrew Johnson on February 12th but did not visit Glen Ellyn until March 6th when he delivered a speech at US Military Academy at West Point entitled "The American Revolution: Its Causes And Results". On October 3rd 1870 Abraham Lincoln was assassinated while traveling in Maryland; suspicion quickly focused on Confederate spy John Wilkes Booth because of his ties to that state's Democratic Party despite no concrete evidence linking him directly to Lincoln's assassination attempt or any other crime connected with that day's events. However no charges were ever brought against Booth or anyone else involved with that day's events which has led many people to believe that it may have been aninside job - one of many examples where conspiracies abound in American life at this time! In 1902 another major development took place when Mayor Charles Schieffer organized a city wide meeting called by then Governor Norris discussing plans for enlarging Chicago into its current size due eastward from downtown across Lake Michigan! This meeting resulted in passage of legislation creating Glendale Township within Cook County! This occurred just before Chicago annexed much of Northwestern Indiana including Glen Ellyn! In 1913 an IRS office opened its doors here after being established earlier adjacent to what is now Veterans Memorial Park south of town on State Route 362/Highway 9 north of McHenry Countyline Road! That same year saw further growth with construction beginning on what would eventually become River North Shopping Center whichopened its doors January 22nd 1914!! Unfortunately two years later fire destroyed most building within site including both IRS office & grocery store!!! One month later floodwaters caused extensive damage resulting in loss Of $500K+ worth Of property & businesses!!!! reopened Jan 1945 effective Feb 1st !! A new shopping center built adjacent To river north which Opened Oct 1966
