Glen Ellyn, Illinois is a small town in the northwest corner of Illinois that was founded in 1892. It became an important center for optical products and accessories industry in the early 20th century. In 1915, the Glen Ellyn Optical Company was founded by two brothers, Edward and Harry J. Schafer. The company produced a wide range of optical products including corrective lenses, telescopes, binoculars, and eyeglasses. The company was later renamed to the American Optical Corporation and then to Raytheon after World War II. The early 20th century saw great growth for optical product production in Glen Ellyn because of its location and infrastructure. The town had a well-developed network of transportation links and access to raw materials from outside of Illinois. This allowed the company to produce high-quality goods at low cost with little impact on local jobs or development patterns. Glen Ellyn, Illinois is a city located in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois. The population was 111,752 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Chicago and the third most populous city in Illinois. It is also one of the fastest-growing cities in America. The name "Glen Ellyn" comes from two sources: one source says it derived from a Scottish word meaning "a glen near Loch Leven," while another source claims it originated with a Gaelic phrase meaning "the place where the bird cawed." The first reference to Glen Ellyn appeared in an 1847 directory and mentioned as "Gleann na hElvin" (Glen Elvin). In 1881, General Grant announced that he would be moving his army out of Chicago and into what would become Glen Ellyn. One of his goals was to improve communication between Chicago's three main areas - north, central, and south - which were then difficult to do by wagon road. To achieve this goal, he ordered Major John Floyd to build a road from Hurricane Road east to Elmhurst Avenue. This road became known as General Grant Boulevard today. In 1886, President Grover Cleveland designated Glencrest Park as an open space for public use adjacent to Elmhurst Avenue and Glencrest Parkway. Today's park includes much of what was once downtown Glen Ellyn before it became part ofChicago's central Business District in 1961. As early as 1871 there were plans for developing land around Glen Ellyn proper including on now demolished Mount Prospect Cemetery site located just east of Yerba Buena Island across MacArthur Boulevard from present day Northwestern Memorial Hospital It appears that these plans never materialized but may have been abandoned due to prohibitive costs or other issues such as railroad competition or changing preferences among developers over rural vs urban sites (Farrell & Farrell 1990). Other potential sites included on both old and new maps include: McGuire Woods off Pulaski Road west of Interstate 75; Griggs Park between State Street and Milwaukee Avenue; Beatty Terrace northwest corner State Street/Milwaukee Avenue; East Harlem along Irvington Road northeast corner Irvington Road/Wabash Ave.; Allendale Township east side Wabash Ave./Allendale Rd.; Virgilio Manor southeast side Wabash Ave./Virgilio Rd.; Northbrook Township northeast side Cicero Rd./northwest corner Cicero Rd./northwest border US Highway 6) There are numerous possibilities for development within minutes' drive of each other making development difficult if not impossible without more detailed planning !! A 1863 map shows Presbyterian Reformed Meeting House being built on undeveloped land near present day intersection Bloomingdale Drive/Bronson Dr., southwest of current day Midway City Mall (now IKEA) In 1865 Rev G H Davidson organized First Presbyterian Church at site now occupied by Christ Episcopal Cathedral School today Reverend Davidson preached here from 1865 until his death circa 1870 This church still stands today despite having been extensively damaged by fire
