Glen Ellyn is a small town in Illinois, United States. The population was 9,644 at the 2010 census. It is located in Macon County. Glen Ellyn was founded on October 7, 1864 by John and Nancy Laird as a farming community named after their father's estate of Glencoe in Perthshire, Scotland. The alluvial bluffs overlooking the River DuPage formed an ideal site for agriculture, and theLairds began growing corn, wheat, onions and other vegetables along with cattle and hogs on their 640-acre farmstead until 1865 when they bought 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land to establish what would become Glen Ellyn. The original town plat was filed on December 12, 1868 with the title "Eldridge Township", but no one moved into it until 1870 when James Hays sent his brother-in-law David Sanger to file a plat for him with the local government. In 1873 Hays built the first house in what would become known as Glen Ellyn while he awaited clearance from the authorities to build a larger home on his new property. By 1880 more than 150 houses had been built around what is now downtown Glen Ellyn including two churches – First Presbyterian and Methodist – as well as five schools: Elmira Female Seminary (now Elmira University), Highland Male Seminary (now Wright State University), Farmington Female Academy (now Northern Illinois University), and Chicago Female Normal School. On November 16th 1888, voters in Eldridge Township cast ballots for township president under the rule that every vote counted equally regardless of size or rural location. George Fenton won by a wide margin over Elijah Meeks who had run unsuccessfully for office three times before that year. In 1893 trustees hired Jethro Cogswell to design and construct an early electric streetlight system which became one ofglenellyn's most distinctive features during its early years. A hotel opened in 1889 called The White Sands Hotel which served as both town hall and post office until 1903 when it burned down; however another building erected later that same year remains standing - The first Masonic Lodge inside present day GlenEllyn limits today only to visitorsgathering services which have taken place there since 1978). The city of Chicago annexed Eldridge Township on April 15th 1907 making it part of Chicago proper although voting continued within Eldridge until 1909 when all township officials were transferred to Chicago under regulations passed by then Mayor Daley following riots at white supremacist rallies across America resulting in violence across different parts of Chicagos metropolitan area culminating with Race Rioting outside Chiks Central Park on August 26th 1908 . In 1913 ordinance #2 was passed giving residents of unincorporated areas within municipality rights similar to those enjoyed by residents living inside municipalities . This gave rise to disputes between Glencullnians over issues such as zoning changes affecting businesses within municipalities while also giving residents access to services available only through municipal governments such as water rates etc... One such dispute saw charges brought against several Glencullnians for not paying gas rates mandated by City Council resolutions while also violating fire code ordinances set forth by Municipal Court judges... On occasion even village meetings are held outside municipal bounds

Glen Ellyn, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 23,914 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cook County. The city has a rich history dating back to 1847 when it was founded by three settlers from Kentucky – John C. Morton, James Dickey and Drury Lewis – on land that now includes the eastern edge of Chicago suburb of Glen Ellyn. In 1854, Morton donated 202 acres (8 km²) to the town for use as a public square and school district courthouse; it became known as Morton Park. In 1865, the town charter was amended to create an urban area including Glen Ellyn and broadened its borders to include all of Cook County east of the river Koster Creek. In 1922, construction began on what would become one of Chicago's first high-rise buildings: The Elwyn Tower at 111 South Michigan Avenue (now part of McCormick Place). One year later, in 1923–24, City Hall moved from its previous location at Dundee Square in downtown Chicago to Glen Ellyn following fire damage done during Hurricane Agnes. The business community around Illinois Terminal Railway Station responded quickly to this new opportunity by creating a small shopping center adjacent to Terminal Rd., which still exists today as part of Gateway Plaza mall complex east of I-90 & I-95 exit 20A/20B on Interstate 90W just off Veterans Road near Soldier Field football stadium - one mile north from home plate at Wrigley Field - and two miles south from Northwestern University's Evanston campus where many businesses had relocated due to World War II GI Bill availability in neighboring suburbs such as Evanston Heights and Plainfield Village. This small shopping center consisted mostly of newly built brick retail buildings erected between 1924 and 1928 with parking facilities added later when larger lots became available nearby on State Street near Union Station (renamedState/Northwest Expressway after statehood). Today Glen Ellyn features several large commercial properties along Stevenson Boulevard inside Loop 610 including Sears Roebuck & Co., Macy's Incorporated (), JCPenneyCo., Apple Incorporated (), Coca ColaCola Company(), Jardine Livingstone Holdings Limited (), Pabst Brewing Company (), Allstate Insurance Corporation (), FedEx Ground () and many more smaller businesses squeezed into small storefronts or wings scattered throughout single blocks or tracts comprising much older housing developments originally laid out for agricultural purposes including old dairy barns converted into apartments or other uses before being replaced by modern multimillion dollar office complexes making their way through dense neighborhoods such as Manor Hill located just northwest of downtownGlen Ellyn covering nearly 2/3rdsofthecityanditsnorthernborderwithManorHillwhichgivesthecityits nickname "The Hills".
