The town of Glen Ellyn, Illinois was founded in 1868 by John C. Frick and his brother-in-law, George Stephenson. The community is located in the far northwest corner of Cook County on the north side of Chicago. It became a center for ammunition production after the opening of the Illinois Central Railroad in 1875. In 1907, Glen Ellyn was named one of five towns in Cook County to receive city status.

The Village of Glen Ellyn was founded in 1868 by settlers from Scotland and England who had trekked through what is now Illinois on their way to the new world. The name "Glen Ellyn" comes from a small stream that ran through the village. The first post office in the village was established in 1872. By 1907, only a few buildings remained standing in Glen Ellyn after years of development and growth. As early as 1860, farmers had been growing corn and wheat on property that now includes much of downtown Glen Ellyn. In 1902, construction began on what would become one of DuPage County's largest textile mills - White & Company Limited - which would employ more than 1,000 men for many years. Located just east of downtown on State Street near present-day Elmwood Park Cemetery, this mill produced some of DuPage County's most famous products including clothes for President Abraham Lincoln and General Ulysses S Grant; paper products such asFax machines; tires; soapstones; and lumber for buildings such as Northwestern University's Law School and other national landmarks. In 1955, when Interstate 95 (I-95) was built throughDu Page County, parts of downtown Glen Ellyn were destroyed by an adjacent expressway movement resulting in scores of jobs being lost among those affected including many textile companies that had taken root there over the years. In 1984 local developer Don Shanklin purchased several blocks containing much remaining wreckage from I-95 along with other properties adjoining it creating what is now known as Shanklin Plaza - one block long with multiple levels featuring restaurants, shops/stores, apartments/condos and office space currently used by businesses like United Parcel Service (UPS), Sears Holdings Corporation (Sears) and Motorola Incorporated (Moto). With I-95 bypassing town entirely during its construction process making it difficult to find parking or even access to any street boundaries within walking distance anywhere within the complex making it difficult to do anything except drive around inside looking for open spaces if you wanted to use something beyond your building's front window...the result has been quite something! After more than 25 years since its inception Shanklin Plaza has seen numerous updates/refinements including an updated logoCompletely renovated exterior facade completed Fall 2013 ...this unique plaza offers residents plenty opportunity to get out into their community while still having full utilize of all their amenities
