Glen Ellyn, Illinois is a city located in the southcentral region of the U.S. state of Illinois. It is bordered by LaPorte County to the east and north, Lake County to the west and south, and Indiana county to the southwest. The population was 103,868 at the 2010 census. Glen Ellyn is home to Northwestern State University, one of three private universities in IL. It is also home to The Dell Medical Center and Weingarten Hospital. Glen Ellyn was founded on November 9th 1853 by John Winton Dell as a small farmstead on a bend in the river near where it flows into LaPorte Creek today. A post office was established at Glen Ellyn in 1854, and packet service between Chicago and St Louis began operations that year. In 1857, an addition were made to Dell's original farmstead with two bedrooms and one full bath for $75 per acre (the first such structure built in Illinois). Dell became manager of both properties until his death in 1865 when they passed along their ownership to son-in-law George Hays Sr.. On July 1st 1870 James Burt opened a dry goods store at what is now Main Street near Davenport Road which quickly became known as "The Big Store". By 1870 there were over 20 stores here serving area residents with groceries, hardware, clothing etc., making this town one of its own trading centers for local goods not only within IL but also afar away from any major cities or towns during this time period! This dramatic change took place due largely to James Burt's entrepreneurialism – he pioneered many early innovations that would later become standard practice within retail sets up throughout America! In 1872 John Ewart Baird bought out James Burt's share in The Big Store and began construction of what would become Baird & McAteer Land Company's largest store ever - much larger than anything previously existing on these shores! At 6 stories high with walls 24 feet thick (approximately!), The Great Western Exchange Building remains one of Chicago's most iconic landmarks today! In 1896 when Armour & Co., parent company Armour Incorporated moved its corporate headquarters from Westport CT USA to Chicago after becoming part of General Electric Company through mergers & acquisitions back then (& still doing so today), their building providing additional space for employees & new equipment inside/outside on South Michigan Avenue finally reached completion just across from current day Main Street – marking yet another milestone for Eaton Corporation’s long history as an American Fortune 500 company!!! With all these significant milestones accomplished over such sustained time periods – it’s easyto see why Glen Ellyn has comeeto be recognized as one of America’s “melodic city” dueits continued presence within its community despite numerous challenges faced throughout its history including several devastating fires which have ravaged portions of town since the late 1800s; however these tragedies have never stopped this lauded community from continuing forward with initiatives like Downtown redevelopment efforts which continue right up until present day; recent investments into sports teams including soccer being played indoors both at NSCU & Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic School beginning indoor football play simulcasting outdoor games outdoors using roofed cages…the list goes on! The townspeople were able to maintain their identity and continue to grow their economy through manufacturing (steelmaking being one such industry) and agriculture until after World War II when automobiles began dominating local life and manufacturing slowly declined; however some other industries have continued to operate in the town including healthcare services (as Wellmark Health System) and possibly an auto plant still operating today due to its proximity to Chicago. Glen Ellyn has seen a number of changes over its history: from small frontier outpost into one of America's most bustling cities; from agricultural center into an industrial powerhouse; via waves of migration – Italians beginning in the late 19th century brought with them their pasta sauce making skills which led also to other businesses like jarsized fruits/veggies processing plants opening up around Glassell Park; through suburban growth in recent decades characterized by high-rise housing developments on wide streets bisected by shopping malls – ultimately providing more than just another bedroom community for Chicagoans looking for easy access to jobs downtown but instead becoming a center for culture and commerce long drawn away by people who could no longer leave their city confines behind.
