Glen Ellyn, Illinois is a city located in the northwest corner of Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was estimated at 101,824 as of the 2010 census. It is the fifth-largest city in Chicago. Glen Ellyn's history can be traced back to 1871 when it became one of the first towns in Cook County to allow handguns and rifles with magazines that could hold up to twenty rounds. It wasn't until 1934 that year that a handgun ban was placed in town. In 1938, Glen Ellyn became home to the world's second gun magazine factory, which manufactured Winchester Model 1903 rifles for the US military during World War II. The factory closed its doors in 1945 but left behind an impressive legacy - it is now part of gun manufacturer Springfield Armory Incorporated. In 1969, Glen Ellyn joined forces with neighboring Willits and merged into one municipality becoming "Glen Ellyn/Willits". On November 15th, 2006 voters passed a referendum asking for annexation by Chicago making Glen Ellyn become a city once again under its own government and laws. Mayor Robert Garcia announced on December 5th that annexation had been approved and would take place on January 1st 2007 subject to City Council approval.. The referendum created controversy as many residents felt they were annexed without their consent while others thought it was an accurate depiction of what was happening on election night due to confusion over local voting rules

Glen Ellyn was founded on October 1, 1854 by James Wirths and his wife, Emma Prentice Wirths. The city was named for Ellen Gertrude Wright (1824–1901), an American woman who helpedfound Davenport, Iowa in 1846 and then Chicago. The first store in Glen Ellyn opened its doors on October 1 of that year. At the time it was one of only a few stores open in what would become one of the largest U.S. cities by population when it incorporated as a municipality on December 2, 1854. A post office was established in Glen Ellyn on March 17, 1860; it remained open until 1959 when it merged into the larger Chicago Post Office system. In 1870 alone, there were sixteen businesses operating within GlenEllyn limits – eleven storefronts and five farms – making it one of America's earliest towns with a commercial center! Throughout its history Glen Ellyn has been championed as "the Athens of the Midwest". First as an agricultural community with significant wheat production; later becoming known for its numerous subdivisions serving both urbanites and rural residents alike - each providing unique cultural experiences unavailable anywhere else within a radius measuring over 350 miles! Additionally some of America's most popular tourist destinations have also sprung up around town: The beautiful White River Valley (home to Hennepin County's biggest waterfall) being just one example (!), while others such as Midwestern Brewing Company (founded in 1946) or Lakeshore Drive Golf Course (established 1984) offer visitors unique opportunities to experience local culture not typically found elsewhere outside large metropolitan areas! The town was founded by Scots-Irish immigrants in 1839 as a farmstead on the east side of the Chicago River. The early settlers were farmers and their families who raised crops and hay for livestock and sold goods from their homes to local merchants. A sawmill operated in Glen Ellyn from 1847 to 1850; later it became an flour mill. In 1875, John Dorney organized what would become Lake Michigan Brewing Company in Glen Ellyn. The company's first beer was brewed with corn water and maize malt that had been brought over on freight trains from Holland. From the early days of its establishment until World War II, Glen Ellyn was one of Illiniapolis' leading commercial centers; its retail store buildings remain extant today (though most have been replaced by more recent structures). Its banking institutions include First National Bank (founded 1865), State Street Bank (1887), Commonwealth Life Insurance Company (1910), Trustmark SavingsBank (1914), Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company (1920), Aldrich Chemical Corporation (1925) and Peoples Gas Light Company Incorporated (). In 1940, when Illiniapolis became a city, Glen Ellyn lost much of its commerical importance but retained many of its cultural resources: the community has several museums including the Museum of Art located on State Street between Wacker Drive and Randolph Road; two churches: Our Lady Helping Hand Cathedral which opened in 1961; and Holy Cross Parish where services are held each Sunday morning at 10am followed by lunchtime refreshments served inside the parish hall before departing for home again across Wacker Drive to continue worshiping there that day; Glen Ellyn also contains numerous businesses such as Beechcraft Aircraft Manufacturing Co., Inc., Hargrave Tire & Rubber Co., Ltd., Sears Roebuck & Co., National Broadcasting Corporation's WOR-TV which aired programming out of studios located adjacent to Holy Cross Parish until 1951 when WOR moved into larger facilities on Oak Park Boulevard near Randolph Road; druggists including Welles Drugs Stores Incorporated (), Bayer AG USA (), Heublein AGUSA () - now GlaxoSmithKline plc (); toy manufacturers including Mattel Electronics Incorporated (), Fisher-Price International (); paper products companies such as Pabst Brewing Corporation (), American Paper Coalition (), JanSport Corporation (); while other industries included engineering firms like Northrop Grumman Missile Systems Division (), Motorola Solutions ', Westinghouse Electric Power Electric Generating Station ', Mohawk Industries Limited ('); truck manufacturer Ford Motor Company ; agricultural production includes dairy farming done by Danone Foods SA () since 1957(), some acreage is also leased or rented for hunting purposes through Safari Outfitters LLC.; light manufacturing includes chemical manufacturing including Alcoa Aluminum Holdings llc ('s operations ceased operations in 2006'), electric motor manufacture headquartered at Schneider Electric 's factory west of town upon Alcoa's decision not to renew a lease'; food processing includes winemaking represented by L’Oréal SA ('s product lines began production at his original Winery Rd location south of town in 1986'); educational institutions include Stroudsburg Area Vocational High School District #5 (/', now White Pine Valley High School ), Northern Illinois University Carbondale \'\'s Carbondale Campus '; corporate headquarters are currently located off I-88 exit 136B near Allentown
