On December 14, 1892, Glen Ellyn began its own municipal gunlight display program. The first municipally owned and operated gunlight show was held at the old Legion Hall on Main Street. The program featured local artists displaying their work in the light of various firearms.

Glen Ellyn, Illinois is a small town located in the northcentral United States. The population of the town was 9,866 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Glen Ellyn" comes from two Scottish settlers, Alexander Macdonald and his wife, Lady Jane Grey. They named their farmhouse after one of Edinburgh's many high schools - Glen Eilan. The first Europeans to set foot on what is now Glen Ellyn were French traders in 1763 who named it for Loch Lomond (the source of the River Elgin). In 1802, John Cockerill founded a grist mill here that still stands today and became one of Illinois' leading flour mills. He also built a large home here which remains standing today called Cockerill House. In 1859, local farmers started growing corn on their land which led to the founding of the Pioneer National Bank in nearby Lombard which continues to be a major financial center in this community today. In 1892, The United States Post Office was organized here when General George Washington Polk delivered an address on behalf of President Grover Cleveland during its incorporation into Illinois as a U.S."Postal District". This event helped promote rural mail delivery and has been cited as one of Glen Ellyn's most significant contributions to its current status as an agricultural center and commercial hub enjoyed by many within and outside the community. In 1916-1917, construction began on what would become known as Elmwood Avenue including muchneeded housing for residents near Soldier Field then known as White Sox Park before being renamed Humboldt Parkway following World War II when Chicago relocated all American military forces away from suburban areas across Cook County creating an enclave called "Hollywood" within NorthwesternChicago extending into Evanston Township adjacent to Northbrook Village inside Glendale Heights just south of Lake Michigan
Glen Ellyn was founded in 1847 as a small agricultural town on the border of Illinois and Wisconsin. In 1870, it became the terminus for the railway that now makes up much of Interstate 90. The town's growth continued until the early 1900s, when factories replaced agriculture as Glen Ellyn's mainstay. In recent years, however, the city has become a major political and cultural center in central Illinois.
