Glen Ellyn is a small town in Illinois, United States. It is the second most populous city in the county of Cook, after Chicago. The population was 21,671 at the 2010 census. Glen Ellyn is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded by Scotsman Donald McKay and his family in 1857 on a tract of land that he had obtained from the government for $2 per acre (0.89 km²). The original village name was "Newburgh." In 1871, McKay named his new town after himself, and it remained known as Glen Ellyn until 1974 when it became an incorporated city under state law. The first mayor was Lorne Shaw; later mayors were Edwin Meese III (1979-1981), Philip Daley (2002-2006), Rahm Emanuel (2011-2015), John Bel Edwards (2018), and Scott Brown (2019). Glen Ellyn's history goes back to 1857 when Scotsman Donald McKay and his family settled in what is now Glen Ellyn on a tract of land they had obtained from the government for $2 per acre (). At first, the McKays ran a farm with five cows and one horse. They also traded goods with other settlers in nearby towns such as Downers Grove and Carbondale. By 1870, their holdings had grown to include over 100 acres () which they developed into an agricultural center with wheat, corn, cottonseed oilseed production etc.. In 1871 Kenneth McKay sold his share in the business to his brother Donald who continued to run it until 1924 when he sold it all again to William Cramer who operated it until 1984 when he passed away. In 1924 Kenneth McKay's widow married George Macdonald who also took over running the business until 1954 when she divorced him and handed management over to her son David McDonald who operated it until 1984 when he too passed away making Glen Ellyn an open shop community where anyone could own property or take part in day-to-day operations (). From 1954 through1974 there were only three operating families: David McDonald's sons Malcolm & Neil McDonald; Kenneth McMaster's daughters Jessie & Diane McMaster; & Nellie MacDonald’s husband Archibald MacDonald (& wife Muriel) . With few exceptions these familiesoperated singlehandedly for most of those years as co-ownership abolished municipal governance within cities by definition at that time .) Finally effective July 1st 1974 local selfgovt came into being thru passage of IL Municipal Law 5 ILCS Sec 775 (). This changeover left all private citizens owning property zoned for industrial use without any say or vote whatsoever regarding zoning changes or future development .) The following year on October 16thDavid McDonald’s grandaughter Jessie married Archibald MacDonald (& wife Muriel) becoming sole proprietor inter alia.)
