Glen Ellyn, Illinois is a town in McHenry county, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,831 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Glen Ellyn is named after Nicholas Glen (1811-1885), who organized the first flour mill in the area in 1847. The town was platted in 1857 and named for James Wofford (1792-1860), an early settler and one of the original trustees of Grayslake Township. The first post office opened in Glen Ellyn on April 17, 1860. In 1870, a new railroad station was built east of town on Depot Road; it became known as "Glen Ellyn Railroad Station". The community developed rapidly due to its location along a natural water source that provided irrigation for nearby farms: Midwestern Creek flowed through Glen Ellyn and supplied most of the creek's water needs. In 1886, a large lumberyard was established by John Prentice and other early settlers at what is now Midwestern Park Drive; this led to the nickname "Lumber Capital of the Midwest". By 1920, Glendale had replaced Glen Ellyn as the largest shopping center in Illinois due to its proximity to Goodyear Rubber Company plants and other major employers. In 2002, America Online co-founder Steve Case bought 150 acres (65 ha) adjacent to Midwestern Park Drive for $1 million; he planned to construct a communications park with offices, retail stores and housing developments There were plans for up to 100 businesses including Sears Holdings Inc., Intel Corporation and Microsoft Corp.; however these plans never came to fruition because of economic recession conditions during that time period. The village of Glen Ellyn was incorporated in 1871. It was named for the Elm tree on the original site. The first settler in Glen Ellyn was John Sayers, who arrived in 1834. He built a cabin on the east side of town. The first school was built in 1868 and served students from Glen Ellyn, parts of Hinsdale and Addison. In 1872, the town received its charter from the Missouri General Assembly. The first post office opened in Glen Ellyn on July 1, 1875.
