By 1870, there were only a handful of families living hereabouts; by 1900 there were over 100 residents in all! Glen Ellyn began as a small farming community with a few buildings on Elm Street. But it wasn’t until 1915 when the first high school opened here that things really took off! And from then on, Glen Ellyn quickly became known as “the center of learning for rural people throughout DuPage County”! (Today) In addition to its many cultural attractions – like its rich history and beautiful landscape – Glen Ellyn is also home to some great businesses and services: including several hospitals (including Stritch Medical Center), two shopping malls (OneWest and Sears), an arts district with several galleries and performance venues, and much more!

Glen Ellyn, Illinois is a small town located in Lake County, Illinois. The population was 15,523 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lake County. The first settler in what is now Glen Ellyn was James Hickey who arrived in 1839. He and his family were the first to live on the current site of the town. Hickey's land included present day Glen Ellyn and parts of Addison and Belvidere counties. In 1845, John Stephenson bought one-third of what would become Glen Ellyn from Hickey for $2,000 cash. Stephenson built a log cabin on his farmstead which served as the nucleus for what would become Glen Ellyn. In 1865, Alexander Dunlap became the first white person to inhabit what is now Glen Ellyn when he purchased 5 acres from John Stephenson for $10 worth of salt pork and potatoes. Dunlap named his new settlement after himself – "GlenEllen". The name stuck and by 1876 there were over 100 residents living in Glen Ellyn. By 1900, only about 25 residents lived in Glencullen with most being farmers or fishermen who rented land from other landowners around town for raising crops or fishing access points on Long Beach Lake (now known as Crystal Lake). In 1920, an act was passed by the General Assembly of Cook County that designated Glencullen as either a township or village depending upon its size but no action was ever taken to change Glencullen’s status to a city until 1978 when then Mayor Donald Ritchie proposed that cityhood be granted to Glencullen pursuant to Section 10a of the Chicagoan Charter Amendment Act (1978). On November 3rd 1978 vote by referendum volume 2 cast ballots across all wards showed majorities voting “yes” (64%) support for giving cities rights similar to those enjoyed by townships during their formative years while 36% voted NO (36% against) associated with concerns about parkland east of I-294/Upper Midtown becoming annexed into larger municipalities if cityhood were granted; this area now includes much of downtown Chicago within walking distance! With passage by City Council on December 6th 1978 led by Alderman Harry Johnson Parkhurst followed on January 8th 1979 following ratification through referendum vote all citizens over age 16 must sign an oath before taking office swearing they will not sell or lease property within city limits until approved via charter amendment process! This assurance helped preserve much downtown business district including many large corporations such as Sears Roebuck & Co., JCPENneyCo., Motorola Solutions Incorporated etc.) After more than two decades without any action it finally happened – On April 1st 2003 with passage #1oftheCityCharterAmendmentAct series Aldermen Donnelli and Johnson sponsored Resolution No:2003-C44 recognizingGlencullen municipal government as a full-fledged city! This event represents an incredible milestone not just for Glencullen but also Cook County as a whole hosting over 120 cities under one roof! Glennon has been part of Cook County since 1920 when an act declaring it either TownshipOrVillage changed its status based upon its size but no action ever took place to change its status back until 1978 where then Mayor Donald Ritchie proposed Cityhood be granted pursuant to Section 10a Of The Chicagoan Charter Amendment Act which eventually happened on April 1st 2003 with Passage #1oftheCityCharterAmendmentAct series Aldermen Donnelli And Johnson Sponsored Resolution No:2003-C44 RecognizingGlencullen Municipal Government As A Fullfledged City
Glen Ellyn was founded in 1854 as a small settlement on the banks of the Mississippi River. It grew rapidly due to its location and began issuing its own currency, the "Glen Ellyn Bill". In 1877, it incorporated as a city and became one of the largest in Illinois. The city experienced rapid growth during the early 1900s thanks to its infrastructure and industry, which included manufacturing, agriculture, and transportation. However, World War I interrupted this progress and Glen Ellyn struggled financially until the late 1920s. The city experienced another large burst of growth during World War II due to its strategic importance as a refueling station for American bombers flying over Europe. However, post-war economic decline lead to many job losses and social problems in Glen Ellyn. For most of the 20th century, it remained an small town with limited development opportunities.
