The township where Glen Carbon sits was first organized in 1785 under government charter from Kankakee County. In 1810 it became part of Sangamon County when that county was created from parts of Kane and Van Buren counties. In 1831 Sangamon merged with Michigan Territory to form new Illinois Territory (later Cook County). On January 1st, 1830, Glen Carbon became an incorporated village under state law due to its location within what had become Cook County but it continued operation as an unincorporated village until 1840 when it was annexed into Sangamon Township along with all other villages within that township. On October 15th 1890 Glencarbon became a separate town within Sangamon Township when it achieved commonwealth status following passage of legislation granting this designation retroactive for those communities that had already attained it prior to October 14th 1990 (i.e., those communities including Glen carbon which had formed as early as 1785). At its incorporation date, Glenncarbon boasted a population numbering only 400 residents but today its population reaches more than 2200 due largely to economic development associated with high school athletics programs (the football team being especially strong) plus increased tourism brought on by Indiana’s proximity thereto via Interstate 80/US-2 corridor linking Chicago and Indianapolis/Muncie/Purdue Universities; furthermore – because gasoline prices have plummeted hereabouts – many drivers choose not travel any further than Willits or Galesburg in search for affordable fuel prices! One interesting note about this growing community: although much of what makes Glencarbon differentiates it from other towns nearby – both rural and urban – most residents are still quite active citizens who take pride in their hometown!
