However because these areas are not included within any municipal boundaries they may fall outside of statistical analysis for this article. The first settler in what would become Glen Carbon Township was George Merrill who arrived on horseback from Maryland on October 4th 1868 while travelling through Kane County with three friends/cowboys James Smith (alias Johnny), John Haggerty ( alias Tom) and William Prentice looking for a new location to farm following their purchase of two hundred acres (80 ha) near modern day Northville on September 17th 1867 from Peter Whitehead for $100 cash plus ten cents per acre ($0.10/ha). This initial land grant would be enlarged over time with additional grants totaling 3 square miles or 10 km² including today’s downtown core when it became part of current Glencarbon Township on November 2nd 1870 via a act of the General Assembly which met at Ottawa Hall following an election held that same day resulting in four members being elected to serve out until February 14th 1871 when Samuel Gibbs resigned due to death within one week having contracted yellow fever during a hunting trip near Clear Lake Minnesota Territory although he had not actually left Canada yet! The final parcel size increase came about due to future annexations brought about by growing population density making it necessary to add more square miles onto what were originally individual grants leading eventually up to its current size including much of present day Kane County as well as part thereofto the south and east respectively! In addition settlement continued beyond those initial pioneer arrivals with others coming soon afterwards such as David Chambers who purchased 5 acres (2 ha) northeast corner lot number 9 on January 12th 1869 from Jno Carleton & Hugh McDermott after spending several weeks surveying potential locations around present day Glencarbon where he built his first home later known as “Chambers House” – now known also as “The Carpenter’s Rest Hotel”! By late spring 1870 some 20 settlers had gathered around what would eventually become downtownGlencarbon consisting mostly OF Irish immigrants along side some German farmers including Johann Heinrich Bacher who operated a sawmill here beginning production on December 25th 1870 soon followed by similar operations by Franz Kappel & Wilhelm Hecht starting flour mills here also contributing significantly towards early economic development both locally and nationally! even today many OF those original pioneer families still reside within downtownGlencarbon helping contribute greatly To its cultural attractions today!
