Glen Carbon is a small town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit Glen Carbon were French traders who went there in 1679 as part of their exploration of the region. In 1812, General Anthony Wayne and his army invaded Illinois and found Glen Carbon under siege by the Shawnee Indians. Wayne's force repelled them and burned down the village to punish the Native Americans for practicing war without permission from Congress. In 1821, John Pemberton founded Pembertonville (later Rockford) west of present-day Glen Carbon on land that he had purchased from one of the Shawnee chiefs in exchange for horses and munitions. He named his new community after himself, in honor of his father's birthplace in Ireland. A post office was established at Glencarbon in 1825; it remained open until 1959. In 1828, a group of Swedish farmers arrived at Glen Carbone, about southeast of present-day Glen Carbon, and started a farmstead called Hjälpér (help). They would remain there until 1840 when they moved upriver to what is today Belleville Township
