Glen Carbon, Illinois is a small town located in the eastern third of the state of Illinois. The town was founded in 1881 by General John J. Pershing and his wife, Emma. The Pershing family became very wealthy through their business interests in Glen Carbon. One of their most famous businesses was the Pershing Electric Company which manufactured electric lights and radios. In 1916, the company merged with Knox Electric Company to become The Knox Corporation. This company manufactured televisions and other electronic products until it went bankrupt in 1978. In 1947, General Motors (GM) acquiredKnox Electric Corporation. GM used Knox's technology to develop cars such as the Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird. At its peak, GM produced more than 350 million car models across a variety of brands including Corvette, Buick Regal, Cadillac Eldorado, Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme, Saturn Ion and Pontiac Sunfire). However, by 1984 GM had divested all its U.S.-based assets except for production of high-speed trains at its former Rhee Foundry plant in South Korea (where today Hummer HGTV brand vehicles are made). The closure of this plant left Glen Carbon with few opportunities for economic development. However, over time some new businesses have started up in what was once an industrial wasteland: 1) A small grocery store called Grit & Grains has been open since 2003 on Roosevelt Avenue near US Highway 6 exit 316; 2) a law firm named Morrison & Foerster opened offices in 2009 on State Street near US Highway 6 exit 317; 3) medical equipment sales company Medtronic opened an office in 2013 on Broadway near State Street; 4) energy services company Avon Energy Companies LLC opened an office in 2016 on West Elm Street near US Highway 6 exit 318; 5) a restaurant called Goody’s Pizza served pizza from 1947 until 1982 when it moved to its current location on East Elm Street proximate to I-55 southboundexit 319

Glen Carbon is a census-designated place in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The original name for Glen Carbon was "Algonquin". The community was founded by John A. Mackey in 1871 as a small station on the Butterfield Overland Mail route. In 1876, it became part of the new town of Rock Island and changed its name to Glen Carbon until 1912 when it reverted to Algonquin again. Glen Carbon has been an agricultural town since its foundation. The early residents grew corn, beans, and wheat; today's residents are mostly engaged in manufacturing and business services such as insurance and real estate agents. The industries that have grown here include automotive parts and equipment manufacturer Koyco (now JVC), plastics producer PPG Peacock Plastics Inc., aircraft manufacturer McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Co., computer software company Microsoft Corp., information technology company Oracle Corporation (later Sun Microsystems) and trucking magnateDavid Brownlee's Kenworth Truck Company (now Oldsmobile). The first post office opened in Glencarbon on December 12, 1875; it closed on July 6, 1909 because of the Great Depression. Today there is only one building left standing from when the community had four post offices: one at 154 Wabash Avenue (now Cook Street), one at 288 Niles Road (now University Avenue), one at 345 Niles Road (now Elmira Boulevard), and one at 345 Niles Road/University Avenue which still stands but serves as a museum warehouse

In 1860, a railroad station was built in Glen Carbon and it became an important transportation hub for the area. By 1870, Glen Carbon had a population of about 350 people. It experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its strategic location at the junction of two major railroads. The town experienced significant economic boom times during the late 1940s and 1950s thanks to its participation in numerous military projects including construction of radar towers and factories making munitions. However, by 1974, Glenn Carbon had lost much of its population due to various factors including falling industrial production rates and increased competition from other nearby towns. By 1980, only about 50 people lived in Glenn Carbondownia.
