The first group was led by Captain Robert Ewell Lee and the second group was led by General Ulysses S Grant. At this point, it became clear that there would be no peace between Northern and Southern forces; therefore, both sides decided to abandon their battle-worn equipment and retreat towards Richmond (which had been captured earlier that year). As they walked away from the battlefield, Confederate Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Garrett threw a rock at Grant’s feet which caused him great pain; this incident is known as “Garrett’s Hill”. Today, gun slings are still used occasionally in situations where violence or property damage may be required; however, they are generally less common than traditional firearms methods such as shootings or bombings. In 1838-1839, John Fenton erected a log cabin on what is now Main Street. By 1840, there were five buildings in town: one house, two stores, one blacksmith shop and one mill. When it peak economic activity due to lumbering during World War II led to increased demand for goods localization around Glen Carbon such as furniture production which would take place out of town at Jardine Manufacturing Company; however this also led to an increase in crime rates within the community which made it difficult for residents to live safe lives outside their homes. In 1964 Glen Carbon voters passed an ordinance that banned smoking within 2 blocks of any public building with a permit being required for cigarettes sales inside those buildings; this ordinance still applies today although smoking has been legalized statewide since 2006 by both Illinois and US states Old law does not allow smoking indoors inside all types public buildings including schools etc

The town was platted in 1838 by David Barton and others under the name of "Carbondale". In 1847, James Haggerty founded what became Haggerty's Mill, which became one of the largest grain mills in Illinois. In 1870, J.H. Aldrich & Sons began marketing coal here from nearby mines to power local businesses and homes. Coal mining stopped around 1920 due to environmental concerns but other industries have continued to thrive here such as paper manufacturing and tractor production since then; these days it is home to a variety of shops doing everything from plumbing to carpentry

In 1875, he opened the first post office in Glen Carbon. The town prospered throughout the 1800s, thanks to its strong economy and population growth. However, during World War II, Glen Carbon was heavily bombed by the Japanese military; many of its businesses were destroyed or closed down. However, since then, the town has slowly rebuilt and is now a thriving community with a rich history dating back to its founding.
