The Glenn Coal company closed operations in 1984, but production continued until 1993 at the old site of the mineshaft that still stands today on an undeveloped piece of land near Interstate 55 and State Route 605 (now Main Street). After closure of the mineshaft, residents began logging on lands east of their homes for charcoal production beginning in 1907. This operation continued until 1936 when cessation of logging led to depletion of charcoal stocks which forced abandonment of most holdings within a few years. In 1967, construction began on Glen Carbon High School which opened in 1971 as one of two high schools serving the community; it remains open today with enrollment increasing to over 900 students grades 9-12 since its opening.

The Glenncrombie family ran the grocery store until it closed in 1984; then it was leased out to several other businesses before being sold again in 2006 to its current owner, Tishore D'Souza Sr., who reopened it as a restaurant called "The Glen carbon Grill" in 2007.* The Glenncrombies also kept their home which they turned into a museum* of local history which opened in 2008.* Glen Carbon is one of only two towns (the other being Cape Girardeau) that still conducts its annual Fourth of July fireworks display from their square courthouse lawn."
The Glen Carbon area was first settled in the 1800s. The town was named after a remote peak in the nearby Sangamon Mountains. The town began to grow quickly during the Gilded Age, and by 1920, it had over 1,000 residents. In 1930, Glen Carbon became a city and experienced rapid growth until World War II interrupted its progress. During the war, the city lost many of its residents to military service or death. After the war, Glen Carbon regained some of its population and steadily grew until 1960 when it reached its current size.
