Glen Carbon is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. Glen Carbon is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name "Glen Carbon" is derived from the word "glech", meaning "a glimmering or shining object." The first settler in what would become Glen Carbon was John Iliff in 1811. A post office called Carbondale was established in 1838, and remained open until it was discontinued in 1907. When the railroad arrived in 1856, Carbondale became an important stop on the line. The town began to grow rapidly due to its location and access to resources such as coal and lumber. In 1870, Glen Carbon had a school and a library. By 1880, Glencairn had a store, two churches (one Baptist), two hotels (the Masonic and Crystal Palace), three grocery stores (the Grocery Store of Jagger & Ballard and Wm Gillett & Bros.), two blacksmiths (George Biddle & Sons) and several residences including Oneida House which still stands today. In 1893, Glen Carbon became one of twelve townships within Cook County when it was created from parts of DuPage Township and Hinsdale Township. This gave residents more autonomy over their own affairs with increased opportunities for development outside of their townships boundaries In 1902-1903, infrastructure improvements were made to the town including new streetslopes, sidewalks and water mains that allowed for greater growth within the limits set by those governing them; these changes helped spur further economic development while also giving locals more control over their lives In 1924-1925 local officials formed a committee to study ways to improve agricultural production in the township; this led to establishment of a farmstead fertilizer plant which remains operational today On July 14th 1959 Glencarbon's first high school graduated its last students with distinction earning College Prep status through arrangement with nearbyNormal University

The population of the village was 522 at the time it changed its name to Glen Carbon in 1921. In 1941, when World War II began, General George Smedley Butler called on all American citizens to Help Save America by forming military units for service abroad. Over 10% of the population chose to become soldiers with the USAAF in response to this call-up; among those who volunteered were many members of the Glenn carbon family. Many residents returned home during World War II and helped rebuild their homes after the war ended. Glencarbon is located at (41° 04' 02" N 88° 08' 49" W). According to the 2010 census, its population was 714; however, according to zip code 62002's website which lists only 602 people living there as of December 1st 2017- most likely due to a lack of updated records- its true population may be much higher given its current growth rate
Glen Carbon, Illinois was first settled in 1816 by James K. Dixon and his family. The town was named for the carbonated water discovered near the community. Dixon established a flour mill and a gristmill in Glen Carbon, which he used to produce goods for local farmers and merchants. In 1868, the first electric power plant was built in Glen Carbon, which allowed for increased business opportunities for the town. The town's current name is based on its location within Carbondale Township.
